Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Vintage Fixed Gear will always trump capri pants and white belts.

1925 Automoto This would've been what Tour de France racers would've had

1936 Gloria another TdF racer 1936 was the last year for fixed gear bikes Note the flip-flop hub and wooden front fender

Excellent photos, thanks!

What's the apparatus on the seat tube of the Gloria?

1938 Moorson Twin Tube Basically the chain and seatstays continue all the way to the headtube to make the frame.

If you didn't notice in the first pic, here's a closeup of Moorson's adjustable drop bars.

As I was first reading the thread, I was going to post about how much I loved the Carminargent, but then I kept seeing more and more beautiful bikes and I don't even know where to start. Thanks for posting these!

What's the purpose of those short front fenders on the Gloria and the Thanet?

And the little things that almost touch the tires, are they to judge if the wheel's true or something?

I think those are for flat prevention, they sweep foreign objects off the tire before they come back around and get jabbed all the way in. I like your idea of the true tester, though, could be made to trigger some kind of alarm, or a big blinking "FALSE" indicator.

bbattle, thanks for the great thread. The past got it goin' on!

I believe it is an oiler on the Gloria. The things that touch the tires are wheel scrapers. Sometimes something gets stuck on the tire but doesn't puncture it until it's been there a while so the scrapers flick those things off.
