Seems to be slim pickings, if any. I'd like a set of tubular wheels for road and CX use, but I can't afford to play in the big leagues (go ahead P-Cad, rub it in). My desires:

Sub 1600g/set range
sub $500 range
No carbon (should be obvious already)
Good quality suitable for 220lb (100Kg) rider.
Campy compatible

So far we're talking handbuilt Record hubs/Reflex rims. Nice, but are there other options I'm missing? Post 'em up! Or tell me how silly my idea is. Really it's slow here.

I think you've got it. Go 36 spokes for 220lb rider/cyclocross, 3x, brass nipples... I know it's kind of boring, but those will be really nice wheels.

Question, though, are you going to change tires for road and cyclocross? That'd be a pain. You could probably get some used hubs, or re-use hubs you have, and build two pairs of wheels for around 500 dollars.

I'll change tires. Twice a year won't kill me and I'll need the skill building. CX season is less than two months here.

I think your only options are for handbuilts in that price range. This seems like an ideal solution considering that your wheels will likely need semi-regular maintenance at your weight + CX usage. You should consider contacting Mike Garcia to spec out some different products as well. You could use DT Swiss's spoke calculator (dtswiss.com) to spec out weight on different builds.

I just pulled the hubs and spokes from my 36h Mavic Reflex Ceramic SUP tubulars. I'd sell 'em cheap if you want to build up a set...

Thanx 14. I'd prefer to start fresh, though. Merlin the tires aren't horribly more expensive than good clinchers, unless I get silly with Dugast or the like. It is one more thing to keep shod, though.

For great tires, yes. But, you can get a good pair of 300 gram training tires - 3 for $50.

If you don't mind used and since most people don't care for tubulars, their price drops more than half after a 100 miles on ebay.

Cane Creek do a tubular Volos. I'd probably go handbuilt though. Not sure about Record hubs. Sounds a bit nice for Cyclocross, especially with the new Mirage hubs being so cheap!

I'd say go with record hubs with mavic reflex or velocity escape rims. Yeah you could go with cheaper hubs in the campy line (centaur, veloce, mirage, no chorus in 2007) but they all used sealed bearings. I would much rather have cup/cone. This is of course for the 2007 line. Pre-2007, go for chorus or centaur hubs.

It seems settled then. Handbuilts. I've a shop to lace 'em and would certainly pursue Record hubs. Now all I have to do is get the matter past the Mistress of Finance.

chorus hubs, super comp spokes, and ambroso f20 rims. rims weigh 320 grams, and are tough as nails, it was probably the most widely used rim at paris roubaix.

Those ambrosia rims are pricey, but I'm getting tingly thinking about the climbing wheels I could build with them.

Out of shear curiousity, why tubular only? There's plenty of clinchers in that weight/price range.

First, these would be racing wheels for CX (where tubies are still king), but with proper road tires could also be for road racing as well.

Have to disagree. The Ambrosio rims they used at Paris Roubaix were almost all the heavier Nemesis, not the Crono.

I rode on the 32h Crono's for several years laced to AC hubs and Sapaim XRay spokes, and while they are light, they aren't very tough and went out of true on a regular basis. The also flat spotted, after my second pair I changed over to Mavic Reflex, I would have done the Nemesis but I got a deal. I hope you have better luck.

I wouldn't even think about the Crono's if I was 220.

Another rim option for the OP would be the FIR ST 120. It's in between the Crono and some of the other rims mentioned here in weight, and a bit stronger.

I can vouch for thr Fir ST120s, I built a set last fall, 32h laced 3x to DA hubs with Sapims. Tough tough rims, I run mine using Vittoria evo XGs glued and taped. I only wish they had a machined brake surface. Not easy to find but I did get mine on e-bay for $80 or $90 iirc. Tubular rims can still be found for a bargain.
