Where do you guys get replacement front wheels? I need a 406 / 20" front wheel and i check all the normal places and you have to either buy a f/r set of wheels, or pay two hundred and something bucks.

i just want a regular old same style wheel i had. I don't need carbon fiber or bladed spokes, just a straight wheel.

this is teally aggrevating me, trying to find a reasonably priced replacement front wheel

Cheapest way might be a kids bike - yard sale, Craigslist, WalMart. Don't know what to do with the rest of the bike.

Except a bmx front wheel won't work. I need a quick release hub and thin enough for a road tire, a 1" wide tire.

thats what makes this hard. The stock wheel manufacturer wants an arm and a leg and i cannot find them used

OK 2 issues there , # 1 you are cheap .. 2 for a skinny (25mm) tire, you may have to consider a 451 rim and tire wheel ..

Get over the first, and the possibilities for the 2nd will open up.. result, still, nominally a 20" wheel ..

Before you spend too much time bemoaning the lack of <$200 wheel sets, try pricing rims and hubs. You can always get one built at your LBS. But you may discover that this isn't 1980 anymore.

# 1 who f'ing cares if someone is cheap. I am trying to keep my bikes ride-able while putting a kid through texas a&m so money isn't free flowing. if you don't like what I ask or stuff like that, don't reply to my questions. its as simple as that. (but, knowing how forums work, I bet there will be a lot of kick back to my reply because I am not part of the good 'ol boy club so, what ever..)

now, maybe I am just having a bad day but some times people answer with some really jerk sounding replies. maybe its me, and if it is, I am sorry. I realize what you say and type can appear to be different because black and white versus seeing people's body language results in things being taken differently than meant.

a 451 won't fit.

I already asked the local shop redoing my wheel, and they told me its cheaper to buy another. but their idea of cheap and the prices online don't seem to match.

is there a special # backroom or something? I see people # 1 a lot and there are pages of it.

Nope, there are 23mm tires in 406 available.

28mm too, some of which may be close to 25mm actual width anyway.

Oddly, I am not sure if there are any listed 25mm tires out there in 406.

I went looking for a new, cheap-ish 406 wheel for my Wishbone about a year ago, and found it difficult as well.

I concluded that the best way was for me to rebuild around an old hub.

In rims, the best value I found was a SUN CR18, available from Universal Cycles.

The only issue to keep in mind is that you should use a tire that is at least 28 mm or so wide. The rim itself is 22mm. An actual 23mm wide tire would be too narrow. A 25mm tire would probably too narrow also.

In case you didn't read it the first time, 451 won't work on the OPs bike.

Are you looking for new or used? Try eBay. I listed and sold a few there not too long ago. I might even have one or two used ones left. I really don't know. I keep them around just in case I need one. I think I have 305 16" one on ebay now.
There is a black 406 one on eBay. Just search 406 recumbent front wheel.

The Niagra wheels look suspiciously like BMX wheels with the coaster brakes and wide rims. Doubt they are true
406, but even if they are the BMX heritage is incompatible with narrow tires (<50mm). Further research suggests
BMX wheels are true 406, so maybe one of these might be usable though heavy if meant for BMX service.

Lots of different 406 wheels on Niagara. Many are indeed aimed at BMX. "true 406" wheels can be found on recumbent bikes, BMX bikes, folding bikes, etc. 406 wheels come in various rim widths, hub styles, etc.

OP is complaining about $200 wheels or having to buy a set. For $100 you're looking at used, or a <$50 rim built onto an existing hub, or Ali Express. The wheelset I linked above was for disc, as most of their wheels are; but that particular one didn't have a brake track for rim brakes. They offer other wheelsets for <100 that do have brake tracks; and for that low price it doesn't matter if you use the rear wheel or not.

The last front wheel I had built used a $80 hub and a $200 rim. A Velocity Aeroheat 406 rim retails for $78.99. Build is extra.

The CR18 is 18mm inside width, I have had no issues running a 23mm tire on CR18 rims.

I build my own wheels, which is usually not the least expensive way to go for a wheel, but in the long run can be the most cost effective because you can build it to your needs.

I'd go with a Velocity Aeroheat 406 rim. Velocity rims are easier to build up than many others because they are round and flat

Have you considered reusing your existing hub? Velocity has narrow Aeroheat 406 rims with MSM (machined sidewalls) and various drillings (number of spokes). You can buy directly from Velocity for a few extra $.
I've built wheels from scratch. A front is not very hard (No dishing :-) , though spoke length can be tricky if the rim profile is different, you might need new spokes too. I bought my new (rear) rim & spokes from Peter White Cycles, who advised me on lengths.

The Bike Friday's also use 20" wheels. I think the Pocket Rocket is the 451, the touring models are the 406. I assume some of the other folders do as well. Also, while not popular in the US, the "mini velo" bikes use 20" higher-quality wheels. But the application is not limited to recumbents.

I wondered about parts from Bike Friday, but all that's listed on the website is a dynamo hub 451 wheel for $195.

Use their custom wheelset builder, you can probably build a cheaper one.
