Suggestions for 700x38c tires
I’d like to switch to 700x38c tires on my Soma Smoothie. The 38’s will fit but I’m really at a loss for tread pattern and brand. I live in an area where goat heads seem to be everywhere and any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I was going to suggest Compass until I got the part about goat heads.

From the name of this forum I'll assume that most-if-not-all your riding is on-road. So, I recommend:
Continental "Contact Speed" 700x37 together with Mr. Tuffy "Gold" tire liners.
The price is right, and the longevity is admirable. They're what I roll on.

I have been riding on Panasonic Gravel King slicks. The tread doesn't last all that long, but they ride well. I think they have tubeless ready in 38mm. I have been suffering with slow leaks. Picked up some glass on one ride and got a sliver of steel the previous ride. I really would like to go to tubeless on my rando bike.

Anyway, based on that discussion, I have decided to send my nephew out with 32mm Michelin Protek Cross Max tires, Panaracer “Flataway” tire liners, & Michelin Protek Max self sealing tubes.
Fingers crossed that he can keep his tires full.
The idea is to have more tire to go through before it gets to the tubes.
The fourth line of defense will be old fashioned tire wipers. Hopefully knocking the goatheads out of the tire before they have a chance to get embedded down in .
I have run the Protek Cross Max tires (without the liners or Protek tubes). So far, couple of thousand miles, and they are TOUGH TIRES. However, I find the rolling resistance is a little higher than I like.

Seems tubeless is the way to go from the folks in the road forum that live in goathead country. It's probably what I would try if I had to deal with them.

Ditto, Michelin Protek Cross Max for the ultimate puncture resistance without needing squirmy, inefficient liners. Thickest chevron tread they make plus 5mm Aramid puncture shield. I've never had a puncture flat on those, and I've picked out broken glass, nails, staples, radial tire wires, etc, from the tread.
Or the regular Protek Max for the 5mm Aramid puncture shield and less thick tread.
But the best rolling all purpose tires I've ridden are Continental Speed Rides. Nominally 700x42 but measure 700x38. Only a 1mm puncture shield but they're such a pleasure to ride.
A month ago I switched from Conti Speed Rides to Sport Contact II (renamed Contact Speed) and almost regret it. Thicker tread, stiffer sidewalls, and they feel sluggish despite weighing the same as the Speed Rides. But the 700x32 Sport Contact II fit my existing fenders.
I think I'll buy some new wider fenders and go back to the Speed Rides.

the difference between a lightweight tire and a bomb-proof one is significant speed penalty over a long distance, as might be appropriate in the long distance forum. Unless you get a flat. But sealant should help with that. I think long distance riders that live in a place with a lot of thorns are mostly using sealant now. Some just carry it with them and put it in when they get a flat.
