How to prevent rust on Brompton seatpost?

I’ve had my Brompton for six months. It develops small specks of brown rust all over the seatpost. I clean it, only to have the rust appear again in a week. I’ve come to wiping down the seatpost religiously but I’ve never had to do this before on any other bike I’ve owned.

Should I get it replaced? Is there something I can do to prevent rust?

I’ve ridden it in the humidity of the northeast but never in the rain.

Not sure what's going on with your post but ours (4 Brompton in the house) have stayed nice and shiny. If the heavy chrome has pitted, I'd be checking with your bike store.

We only give our posts a wipe down with a cloth.

We have since replaced two with Ti posts to save some weight when flying.

Do you fold your bikes often? I fold mine about twice a day. I wonder if that has something to do it. That it’s not “airing out.”

Mine went rusty within 2 months of light use and not ridden in the rain as far as I can remember.
Some Brompton owners dispute this, or blame the owner on these forums.
I think you should take it back also.

Our Bromptons are stowed fully folded. When taken out, the Bromptons will be unfolded & folded several times depending if we are making multiple train journeys.

We do not ride them every day as we have a selection of other bicycles in the "fleet"

Your experience prompted me to inspect a friend's older Brompton that has had a much "harsher" life. No pitting but his chrome seat post is more satin in some places.

I'd suggest there may be a fault in the chrome plating of your seat post.

I apply Valvoline Tectyl to the insides of our steel bicycles.
Boeshield T9 is another rust corrosion protectant that is popular in North America.
Wurth have a corrosion protectant too as I am sure do many other firms.

Take care not to get any on the seat post shim.

If this were happening on a regular basis, I'd be seeing it several times a week, but I'm not. I've seen this only a couple times and honestly I think it's just a defect with the chrome process. Have your dealer warranty it.

Color Plus here in Japan makes a beautiful Ti seat post, I just can't justify the $550 price tag. I got a Ti post on eBay for $120, and am quite happy with it. Light, stiff, no rust.

Have you checked to see if your bike is under recall?

That color plus is a rip off. You can buy something similar for much less, such as H&H.

I also got my Ti seatpost on ebay and like it very much.

I didb't recall what model or why. I THINK it had to do with breaking in two maybe, which is worse than a seatpost, but it never hurts to check, whatever it was,

If it were one of mine, I would probably apply synthetic polymer car wax to the post and buff it back to a shine.
