What's the ratio of cars/trucks versus bikes that you own/ have owned?

4 cars, 14 bikes (starting the count when I was 13 and bought my first 10 speed). Edit: so 3.5 / 1 My Prius may well be my last car and I can easily imagine more bikes, so there is room for improvement. 4 /1 should be an "at least". Well done to those above who've made it'

I have owned 7 "adult" bikes IIRC, not including LOADS of BMX bikes as a kid and young man. I am not sure I could recount the number of cars for sure, lifetime.

I am 52 and on my second motor vehicle of my life. I can count at least 20 bikes. So 2 cars for every ten bikes.

Happy to say I've never bought a car in my life. Ones I drove in high school and college were hand-me-downs from my parents. A year after undergrad I began riding a bicycle for transportation, fun, and exercise. I haven't stopped since.

There are now two cars in our house. My wife drives a handed-down Camry from her father. I seriously wonder if that car will ever die, it's amazing. High mileage, over a decade old and it runs like new and is in great shape. We also have a pickup truck. I find them useful tools and my wife is a landscape architect and does design work on the side, so we need it for hauling plants, dirt, mulch, gravel, etc. Passed to her from my father, who knew we could use one and was ready for a new truck himself.

Bikes: I think I currently have 11. I'd say I've had 16-17 in my life.

Cars I've used/"owned" = 4: Bikes = 16-17.
Current cars = 2 (or really zero, since I didn't buy either and I drive the truck maybe once a month) bikes = 11.

The amazing thing is that we own our home, likely aren't moving anytime, and I can get everywhere I need to by bicycle. I could be car free from post-college until I die! (not rubbing it in, I know many people are simply not in the position to be car free)

That is awesome! I know it isn't going to happen, but I can only imagine how different the U.S. would be if this is how more folks lived. I think just taking road rage out of people's lives would drastically change social interactions.

Who knows though, with the rise of urban density. My city is growing at a wild pace. Car traffic has gotten noticeably much, much worse in a really short span. People might lose their capacity to waste time sitting in an idling car. Who knows.

I happen to live in Philly, so there are plenty of ways to get around. I have structured my life so that I don't need a car for daily living. I can walk, ride or take public transportation to work and many other places. I actually prefer locomotion to driving. Even when I had to go to out New Jersey office three days/week I would almost always ride to a train, take that to NJ and then ride 7 mils to the office.


Bought my Subaru in early July of 2016. Just went over 4,000 miles Saturday night. Probably close to 1,000 of those miles were put on during four long-ish trips. I don't really keep good track of cycling mileage, but I do know that I did about 1,400 miles of fully-loaded touring this spring/summer during three separate trips.

For myself? Since I turned 18 in the late 70's and started buying my own, 3 cars/trucks, and 3 bikes. If I include the truck I got as part of a shareholder buyout, then 4 cars/trucks.

If you want to include what I've bought for wife and kids? Well, I can't count that high.

I currently own 3 bikes and one car. As an adult I've only ever owned five bikes, but have owned around ten cars.

Right now I've got one mountain bike, the road bike I've been riding since around 2012, and the road bike which is "Out for deliver" right now from UPS, which still isn't here yet and it's 3 PM, grrrrr. My wife wants me to see the road bike I've been riding to help pay for the new baby, but I don't think it will happen. It would have very low value in resale, but would have substantially better value as a backup bike, to mount on a trainer, or whatever. I do think I need another MTB. Not because of N+1, but because my current is a really worn-out hardtail, but some of the things I want to ride with some friends of mine are really way better done on a full suspension.
