Isn't drafting on cars considered illegal?
I've been seeing it a lot. I thought it was illegal to draft on cars (and other cyclists during time trials).
True or no?

Drafting behind cars is agaiins the rules but generally accepted provided it isn't overdone like on Stage 6 with Dumoulin who was given a time penalty.
Drafting behind other riders in your team is what team time trials are all about.
In individual time trials drafting behind cars or other riders is definitely illegal.

Doping is against the rules, but it took a long time before they did anything about it. Whenever a car passes and the judges aren't too close, you're going to try to catch a draft for as long as you can keep up, the same applies to the press motorbikes. And when the coach is handing out water bottles from the car window, you are going to be towed for the surprisingly long time it takes to pass the bottles. And more than one person has feigned a mechanical or equipment problem so as to be pulled along by the team car while the mechanic pretends to fix the problem. It's all technically cheating, but is considered more innocent than other forms.

If a rider has a mechanical and is just trying to get back to the bunch they can draft off the other team cars. But if you draft off your own team car, you better only do it for a minute or so.

He was so far back that it was best to draft off his team car and take the 20-second penalty, otherwise he probably would have lost more time, but also expended much more valuable energy. Personally I'd like to see a rule change so riders can draft to get back the time they lost on a mechanical.

Allow the practice, and it would be abused. Every dropped rider would be hunting for excuses to be towed ahead.
One would see teams adopting vans rather than small cars.
And every race would have a half dozen riders who had fallen off the back being towed along behind their team vans.
This is one of the reasons why it is a team sport. The teammates are supposed to make a draft line to help the fallen heroes.
