My SPD cleats still have dog crap in some of the crevases I couldn't clean, from an awful person who shouldn't own pets being a selfish a-hole. No thanks.

Heh. During my last tour I got some dog poop in the pedal recess of one of my shoes. Probably stepped in it when I walked a few feet off a rec trail to take a nature break. The really bad part is that I didn't realize it until I got to camp. Before that time I walked through the carpeted aisles of a large outdoor store and the aisles of a grocery store.

Yup, I bring plenty of beer that requires a bottle opener during my bike rides.

This was the same thought I had when I saw them first start selling flip-flops with the bottle opener in the sole (and even worse the ones with a flask built in). But I guess its no worse than the rat poop my wife worries about on the top of her soda cans.

Well knowing whether you dropped the bottle opener in dog poop makes a difference whether the bottle opener is a church key or a cleat.

Anyway, I often wonder about all the stuff our tires throw up from the trails onto our water bottles. Though the downtube and seattube sort of protect it somewhat, there must be quite a bit of stuff get on them. Particularly when in groups with everyones wheels throwing up stuff. And "STUFF", includes dog poop.

But I guess it get back to quantity. Though there are some germs on there, your body can handle a certain amount.

Also.... the OP is opening ale, which should have a higher alcohol content and will kill more germs... right?

Once you understand the principle behind opening a beer with a lighter, you'll be able to use anything with a flat edge and significant leverage to do it.

Sticks, frisbee's, someone else's phone, caribiner, threaded C02 cartridge, most multi-tools, the list goes on. I'd caution against using anything that might get gouged like carbon or painted parts.

Yeah, there's lots of ways to get a bottle open, but I am rarely cycling without my car keys anyhow, which has an opener on it solving that issue!

I'm not allowed to anymore, the wife put her foot down after I crashed with a glass bottle on my pocket and cut my thigh open with the shards

The pedal itself works well and I thought was something that every cyclist knew since forever.

Nifty idea if they are clean. I wonder why we don't see bottle openers in cycling multi tools like they have on Gerbers and Leatherman's.

I just can't help imagining someone awkwardly opening a beer with their foot though... *pop* "woaahh!" *smash*

As a non-drinker I never have understood the connection between cycling and alcohol. When I get finished with a ride I want water. The saddle on the Swobo single speed bike I have actually has a bottle opener on the bottom of the saddle. I guess they want you to drink and ride or something.

Yeah bottle openers are all over the place in cycling. Multi tools, shop tools with a bottle opener in one end, saddle rails, I've seen bikes with a bottle opener built in to the seatstay bridge, I've received some swag at a race once that included a bottle opener/chain keeper meant to bolt on to the FD mount for 1x conversions, in addition to using cleats or pedals.

I assume it's because beer has carbs and calories. Not my thing but YOLO.

They do: https://www.amazon.com/Brooks-Saddles-MT21-Tool-Kit/dp/B00LGVJHDS

They're also built into some nicer tire levers: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/emt-pro-mtb-lever/p/130901?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsr6i5vPd3AIV17jACh1u9wgTEAQYASABEgIYIfD_BwE

I used an ironing board in a hotel room once. Granted one of those won’t fit into my saddle bag.

Beer is awesome after a ride. A nice stout ale is soooo good after a hot ride. I can use my tire levers for that, or twist off caps, or better yet, on tap!

I think it's something you're more likely to see with folks who use their bikes as regular transportation, or tourists/campers.

That said, having something to open bottles with is kinda nice even if you don't drink much alcohol. Not every non-alcoholic drink comes with a twist top.
