Bridgestone XO-1 frame

Spouse picked up a while back a Bridgestone XO-1 missing a good number of parts and what is there probably isn't original and sporting a terrible rattle can paint job. No dents. It is a smaller frame, looks to be 52cm. He was going to build it up as a stealth commuter but found a bike that fit a bit better. So, he wants to sell what he has. Really, what we are looking for is a value for the frame/fork.

Even rattle canned, an xo-1 has cache. At least $250 at a guess. That's probably low ball.

Looks bigger than 52cm btw.

The price is right somewhere between $75 and $250. I'm thinking @oddjob2 hasn't drunk the B'stone tea that @KonAaron Snake is busy brewing.

One problem is how will the seller know it's an XO-1? The geometry some years was the same, the tubing was different and so was the fork crown. I can't tell--perhaps someone else can--whether this is a cast or pressed crown. If the former, then you have an XO-1 but that would be a question that any buyer will have.

You might get $200 plus from a motivated buyer (really a collector) who knows what this is and is willing to sink some money into the bike to restore it.

Otherwise a quality frame like this with a crummy paint job has a $100ish vibe to me for a non collector.

You're a premium member. You could list it here for $200 plus shipping; these things go for some coin if pristine. Usu. this is not the best place to list a bike for top dollar but this might be the exception since there are a lot of hobbyists here who have drunk the B'stone tea and who have the skill set to bring this bike back to life.

Looks like 54cm rather than 52cm. If I were selling it, I'd strip the rattle can paint job. Also, if you can get a serial # off of it, that would help a buyer confirm that it's actually an XO-1, rather than the lower spec models.

Yeah but there are some decent looking parts hanging on it. If a buyer can see the pumpkin under the brown, then that takes care of the ID possible ID problem. $600 sounds high though for a CL listing on what is at the end of a day a project bike.

I need to resist even thinking about driving to MN to buy this bike, : ). If it were a 55, I'd be tempted to pick up another project.

I'd call $600 highly optimistic, given the paint condition, and huge project status. At that price, the buyer better LOVE it, because they'll be heavily upside down when you figure in the resto costs.

We are worried it was listed too high.

I have the serial number off the bottom bracket but I am unaware of a place to check serial numbers against frames.

The bike frame measures 52cm from the center of the crank to the top of the top of the seat tube.

A complete and original XO 1 in perfect condition is worth about $1000 so a rattle canned frame and fork might well fetch $200-300. Not more, as restoring it will be spendy and it won't be worth as much as an original with original paint etc.

You should remove an area of the brown paint to expose the original paint. With any luck the original paint and maybe a trace of the decals will be there, to show it is an XO 1.

But you can confirm it anyway.

The serial number tells you date of manufacture. First character should be a letter = month of production. Second character should be a number = year, e.g. "3" for 1993.

In 1992 the XO 1 was lugged and the XO 2 was tig, and the XO 1 had sidepull brakes. In 1993 they were both lugged and the XO 1 was orange with a fancier fork crown, the XO 2 was purple and had drops, and they had canti brakes. In 1994 there was neither model, only lower end XOs.

That is, I think, a 1993 XO 1. Cantis (so not a 1992), fancier fork crown (compare carefully to 1993 catalog and to photos of XO 1 and 2 bikes - I'm on my phone so can't see details), pump nub on head tube (XO 2 had the nub too, though). Find some orange paint or confirm date with serial number and you'd be 100% sure.

1993 Bridgestone Bicycle Catalogue

That is the most desirable year due to the canti brakes.

Decals here Bridgestone XO-1 Decal Set - VeloCals

Thanks everyone for your help.

It looks like a '93 but has a '92 serial number. I am aware of a number of xo-1's from '93 with a '92 serial. Fork is unclear to me.

+1 great frame set but the **** brown spray can paint and none correct components kill most of the value. If it were just a nakid frame set with good original paint it would be worth $150-200.

Interesting, a MB-1 frameset with original paint and decals is $300 on eBay with 9 bids and 22 hours to go. Poo Brown rattlecan paint and all, a XO-1 frame has decent value.

There's a buyer on that at $400 IMO...at $250 it's gone in 2-3 days. Bad repaint or not, there are very few of these and a lot of fans. Were it my size I'd have no problem paying 300.

I don't think that's the XO 1 fork crown. The XO 1 had a very pretty cast fork crown. Here is a pic, https://www.pinkbike.com/photo/11716594/

You can see the squared off bit over the brake bolt hole that this one seems to be missing. The 93 XO 2 and 3 had a cheaper crown and this looks like it might be it. Actually a number of those orange XO-1s had bad forks so this might be a replacement fork.

The first replacement forks were Construction Orange Unicrown forks with cantilever brakes. BRIDGESTONE later supplied replacement Construction Orange Crowned Cantilever forks. The way to tell the replacement forks (from the defective forks) is to look Inside the steer tube. You will see some raised lines on the inside of the steer tube, designating it as a replacement fork. The problem with the original fork is the fork blade separated from the fork crown. The Crown was good, the Blade was good, the SOLDER is what failed.
