Interesting Bianchi but I am stumped.

I stumbled across on FB market last night and I am puzzled by it. Nothing seems to add up any ideas? $1400, Shipmano 600 post and stem, 105 derailleurs N cranks, Xenon calipers wif what looks like old 600 levers, Athena(?) hubs?

It's been "restored ie repainted and lots of shiny new parts. Any ideas what it was/is?

WOW! I'm not a Bianchi expert but that is beautiful. Just like the bike the setting is immaculate.

1988 Bianchi Limited frameset. Manufactured in Japan. Repainted. Incorrect decals. Fraudulent tubing decals. Incorrect build. Price aimed at those suffering from chronic celestitis.

Yeah, the unicrown fork and thick dropouts betray the build.

If what T-Mar says is correct that's probably an Ishiwata frame not Columbus. That could even be a Fuji Club or something underneath all that paint. I wonder why somebody would go through all the time and effort to do something like that.

I've seen this on the FB marketplace too, it looks like he's trying to get his time and money back. That's a lot of trouble just to sell it. I doubt anyone will give him that kind of money.

It must be profitable - like creating fake Seiko 5 Automatics from the 1970s (well, sort of, the movement & case is a Seiko 5, but the dial is repainted and the movement was probably washed out with lighter fluid). If it costs you a fiver to make (because you've literally got 5000 of them in a box, you just need to put together parts), and you sell it for 20 bucks, then you're making money.

It's safer than trying to fake a 25K Rolex. People start asking questions.

Maybe this bike, all together, cost 800 bucks to put together. Sell it for 1400. Nobody is asking questions, because nobody has the expertise @T-Mar has to spot what's what; and it's not a 25K bike.

Yeah only T-Mar could spot what's off about this

Who makes those dropouts?

They look much more blocky than I would expect.

The tubing should be Tange in Superet configuration. So it''s likely Tange #1 with Tange #2 in the down tube and chain stays. As for the dropouts, I believe they are a rebranded Tange TR set.

OK I'll come clean. At first when I saw the unicrown fork I thought this was a '93 Columbus frame that was repainted and all the chrome covered but that seemed odd. Then I spied those dropouts and I knew I was on to something. The big tip off the lack of any cartouche on the stay cap so knew the likely hood of an actual Columbus frame was slim to none.

I thought perhaps it was a '88 or '89 Sport SX with faux decals but they had the slightly lighter shade Mint Celeste paint.

After going back and fourth with the seller and informing him I was not interested because something didn't add up, he admitted that the frame is in fact an '88 Brava repainted and built up. Tange DB tubing with Bianchi branded dropouts. It is the same frame as the '88/89 Sport SX. It was orginally Italian Red.

I would agree on 87-89 limited the short some what heavy rear drops were on nicer mass produced Japan bikes for a fairly short time frames. While nice looking the mixed Eurocica wrong dated build older than the frame and off color repaint are just bad for the price. I can see why members are confused by the bike the builder was. As for value I would say half the ask or less and put this one as a hard pass for anyone looking to buy.

Before this thread sinks into oblivion did the seller misrepresent this bike? I have not seen his original posting.

IMHO yes. If I understand our IMs he repainted the bike and applied the Columbus decal and '83-87 period Bianchi decals along with the Colorado World Championship decal. He claims to have done it for his personal ride although it is apparently 5-6 cm too small for him. I assume he just baught a decal set off ebay and stuck them on the frame.

This is how someone ends up buying a Specialissma with an Japanes ChrMo tubing and english thread BB

I never said there was anything wrong with a Brava, actually the frame is pretty nice. Is it Celeste? Depending on the year $425 is great deal for a NOS Brava.

Is it Celeste? Natch ! Though I have a blueberry & raspberry Eros and spotted purple Campione that, imho, are its equals in awesomeness.

Seriously, my Brava is '07, a different animal then the creature under discussion.
