Why are roadies going 1x11 or 1x12?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can shift/trim FDs in my sleep. It just isn't that hard. And "(d)aring to not follow the crowd"? Hardly an issue. I ride fix gears and triples. No crowds.

Huh? They're not. The pro circuit visited my 'burg a couple of weeks ago, and I got to watch 6 pro races, men's and women's. I didn't see a single pro riding a 1 x system. I'm also watching every stage of the TdF: not a single 1 x bike there either.

I saw very few discs either, except at the low amateur-lever (Crash 5).

Possibly you missed the discovery that front derailers and shifting as gotten measurably worse since 11 spd. was introduced ?
I have 11 sp on my cross bike and a new CAAD 12 and they are the best shifting systems I've ever ridden. I also have an older Dura Ace and newer SRAM Red. So, my experience cannot confirm that shifting has gotten worse.

Odd that i've done quite a number of 17mph group rides on it with no problem keeping up. It's a 40T with a 11-32 which has about the same range as a 11-28 with a compact crank on my "aging" road bike. Since Long Island is rather flat, only 2000 feet on a 40 mile ride I have no problem climbing and there's just not enough long descents to miss a big ring.

BTW, my "aging" bike has over 23,000 miles. At what points should I be posting in the Vintage forum?

If you can get by with a SS why do you need such a broad range of gears on your 1x set up?
I use a 46 and 11-32. Don't feel like I am missing anything. Gears are close enough and so is the range.
It wouldn't work for me in the mountains, but there are none where I generally ride.

No, no. Bandwagons all had singles long before doubles ever hit the scene.

But yeah, If I were racing in Le Tour I'd conform and have a double like the rest of the crowd.

Agreed. And not shifting/trimming and flipping between rings is even easier!

And yes, if I were touring in the mountains I'd want a triple. Much more useful than a double.

Well, it's the internet so we can have it all, virtually. Still want a pic of OP on the aero Madone. Could be a classic to rival Lampre Man!

Me and the other guys in my weight watchers group are starting a "cycling team" of sorts so I'll probably get stronger, already cycling 20 miles a day on the Madone. Honestly the ride on the Madone is pretty crappy, it just feels harsh. I don't think the design of this bike is any good. When is the last time this frame won in the tour?

Narrow tires at high pressures on IRL roads (AKA not the cream of the crop seen during TdF), will feel that way.

You mean that literally, right, as in 3 more pounds? I mean, that kind of weight loss already justified a "new wheelset" as a reward so pedaling downhill can't be far behind.

A bandwagon? Just a revolution back to what was before and will be again. A bike is a Bike What's changed in teh 40 years I've been away is mainly frames and Tires : Parts appear to be pretty much teh same as they were in the 60's : Only the craftsmanship isn't American anymore

It's not technically a road bike, but I'm 1x on my TT bike with a 54t. If I'm needing something slower than the 54t/25 combo.......then I'm either on the wrong bike for the event or I need to get back to some intervals and get some power back.

I don't live near mountains with a weird TdF or Giro Italia style time trial stage, so no need for a FD and the inner ring.

My cross bike is also 1x. 40t and 12-32. I'm never fast enough on a cross or gravel route to need more than a 40/12 and never the 40/32 is about the same as a 34/28 on a road bike for hills. With a bike covered in mud hopping all over obstacles, 1x is welcome there.

Road bike? Oh yeah it's 2x. I can understand the simplicity argument for an off-road bike and aero for an all-out TT bike, but I can't justify it for on-road. The terrain simply isn't rough enough to challenge chain drops and the terrain not messy enough to muck up a drivetrain enough that a 1x with chain keeper being a necessity.

1X for road is just marketing schtick. It never even passed the smell test with me.

Other than some TT bikes, I have yet to race/ride with anyone with a 1X on pavement, save one guy whose race bike was in the shop. He put a fast wheelset on his CX 1X, but the larger ratio jumps did screw up the rhythm of the paceline a bit.

If someone digs 1X for their own reasons, I won't "harsh their buzz" as long as they don't try to claim it's superiority, a la "riding tubular tires full time."
