Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fondriest was ALL class. '93 was a stellar season for him.

IMO Bauer cost himself the Olympics, the Worlds and Paris-Roubaix due to his poor sprinting technique. He used to flap his elbows when he sprinted and it cost him power and lengths to his opponents. No top sprinter sprints like that.

Good point. Although Davis and he carved up just about every north american race there is between them in the 80s.

Phinney had some real go.

Bauer always seemed to try to muscle too big a gear.. That is something he admitted too in the Olympics in 84 when Grewal beat him in a heads up sprint..

nah, I meant this bit where YMCA suggested Bugno used EPO for too long. What happened to him?

For you fans of '80's cycle racing, a DVD set has just been released about the Red Zinger - Coors Classic races. The set is 3 discs, 8 hours of coverage. They also have the red race leader jersey available too. Available from Velo News store https://www.velogear.com/

In the 1989 TDF TT finish, isn't that underpass by the Seine where Diana was killed?

(yeah, random, I know)

I bought the Coors Classic DVD set, it's pretty nice, and fun to see the coverage of the 1970's races. Colorado was sure a fun place to be in those days, these races were as much of the fun as the Grateful Dead concerts, $9 dollar lift tickets at Breckenridge and fern bars!!

Thumbs up on the Coors Classic 3 DVD set! Available at Velonews Store on the website.
