1991/1992 Klein Rascal - Nearly 100% Original and funky as hell
Hi Everyone,
I have an immaculate and original Klein Rascal mountain bike that is a bit funky. I say this because the frame and components straddle two separate years. The frame color (candy red), the debossed logos, customized Rock Shox M20 mag fork, mission control stem/bar combo, and selle Italia titanium flight saddle are all from the 1992 year, but all of the rest of the bike and components are from 1991, this includes Campagnolo Thorr rims, wheelsmith butted stainless spokes, XT thumb shifters, and the rest of the XT components. The bike even has the serial number stamped on the rear dropouts, and I understand they moved it to the BB in 1992. Super funky and I assume super rare. The paint on the frame is nearly perfect (the candy red is gorgeous!), but on the lower sections of the fork the paint has crinkled, the paint on upper portions of the fork are in great condition. The bike is almost all original other than a set of Ritchey handlebar grips and Panaracer Smoke and Dart Tires. I have one original Specialized Groundcontrol tire, but it’s in rough shape. There is also one TINY ding on the bottom of the down-tube (pictured), but other than this the frame is perfect. I have also serviced and polished the frame and all all components other than the sealed and pressed-in BB, which is still super smooth.
I would like to sell this to get funds to restore my 1989 Bridgestone MB-1, I also need to thin my herd and get some extra $ for my baby boy.
I was thinking of selling for between $1000-$1200. Is this reasonable? Let me know! I’m in no rush so don’t mind waiting for the right buyer.
Thanks in advance for your help!
best,
Ian

Fortunately it’s not a hybrid. Given color, mission control handlebar, and top end components, it’s worth a lot! Check completed items on eBay, they go high, really high compared to other nice MTBs from that era.
im thinking higher than your range, but I haven’t checked lately. Of course to get that kind of money out of a mountain bike you need to reach collectors which typically means pack and ship and country or global exposure (eBay).
i has a pair of mission control handlebars that came on a Schwinn Cimarron (obviously not original to the bike). I had a huge response including a couple of people from Hong Kong. The proceeds from the handlebar more than paid for the bike. Bike also came with original parts.

I do plan on posting on Bikeforums and eBay, and I am willing to ship, even globally if buyer pays shipping I have been watching some rascals on eBay, but they aren’t in as nice of shape as this one, and they don’t have the rare-factor of being an in-between bike with components and specs from two model years.
