1985? Trek 760 Frame Set Help
Hi,
I have someone who would like to trade me a frame to offset the total cost of a Klein Rascal I am selling (listed on C&V sales forum). I don’t know much about the frame other than it is a 1985 Trek 760 with 531 tubing and fork, and what looks to be a campy headset and no BB. The paint is in decent condition, but it does have plenty of scratches and wear.
He wants $400 for the frame set (the trade will offset the price by $400). Is $400 an accurate appraisal of this frame?
Thanks!

Nice frame. I think the price is high as well. That said, are you getting your asking price on the Klein? One way to think of this deal is that the buyer as asking for a price reduction by asking for a high price for the frame. If you like the frame and you're getting the asking price on your Klein, maybe this deal is worth it to you. I'll bet he'll take a lower price on that Trek as part of that deal though.

$400 for a frame/fork is a lot to play with. Nothing wrong with the 760 if that's what you want, but you have so many choices - is this what you want?

I sold this one here on the forum without the Campy headset for $160 . It lingered for weeks before finding a buyer. That was at a time when the market was much stronger.

incazzare.
It's a nice frame but I'd think it was more like a $200 value rather than $400.

It doesn’t have the bottom bracket, and a bit beat up. It does look straight, Reynolds tubing, and US Made in WI.
If it was my size, I’d give you 175.00 for it, bottom bracket and better condition 250 tops. His valuation is a bit high, it would never sell anywhere close to that.

On trades, I look for value in my favor, as the other party is getting a complete bike, and you are getting just a bare frame. No thanks, big pass in this case. I do always mention on trades that the other party should consider selling it themselves first. $400 is dreamland. And Klein MTBs are HOT!

Thanks wrk101 and everyone else!
I didn’t think it was worth $400, and am glad I ran it through here just to make sure. I think it is a great frame, but I was also thinking $200 tops. I let the potential buyer know that I was going to decline the trade. I originally told the buyer I was looking for a steel Italian frame or complete bike for a trade or to offset the cost anyways. Moreover, I had already dropped the original price for him by $200, so the trek would be actually need to be worth $600! Nope. I like the buyer, he is also a bike enthusiast who loves the Klein, so I hope he can come up with the $$$.
I have to agree with you, Kleins are HOT!!! The Candy Red paint on mine is just stunning! But, I’ve got to thin the herd and make some $$$ in my quest for a colnago!

if you call if you call the store would they do a buy-it-now type of deal and you can just go there and pick it up before the auction ends?

Thanks! I tried contacting them, but they have closed already for the day, they’re only open Tuesdays and Thursdays, and even then only until 3:00pm... the auction closes in about two hours. I’m trying to figure out what model it is and if it is actually a legitimate Colnago. The photos are pretty poor quality, but it looks like it may have a “super-something” decal on the toptube. A Super Mexico maybe?
Thanks!

You’re probably right. It’s a shame. I just didn’t have enough in the bike fund to go that high. I need to sell some more of my inventory to be able to capitalize on these deals!
I swear, affordable Colnago’s always come around when I’m depleted. I missed out on a $500 Master Light about two weeks ago (very sad about that one), and just yesterday I found a colnago in a small city about 500 miles away for $250, but the seller was already boxing it to be shipped to someone else, missed it by days! And I’m not one to poach someone else’s good deal by offering more. That’s just bad karma! Haha.
the right one will come at the right time.

Ok double the price but i knew it'd turn up from a reseller.
