lighest wheels or most aero wheels?
In a circuit race with mostly long straights, what wheelset would be optimal?
IE: a lighter wheel such as ksyrium sl's OR anything with an aero section like a Cosmic or a zip 404/303 ?

I think ksyrium sl's are heavier than 303/404, tubies and clinchers (tubies are definitely lighter).

Unless it's a pure hill climb, or a race that ends with a big hill and you're going to be protected by teammates until the final climb, aerodynamics always trumps weight.

IOW, would a 40mm rim depth but 3kg wheel weight negate this statement? especially in a crit, where accelerations are frequent?

I think the soul 4.0's are a pretty good balance between cost, weight, and aerodynamics. I forget who, but someone came up with the number that 40mm is right around where the 'real' benefits start happening.
Was it fatboy? Some engineering types, I don't even remember.

There is a crossover point for depth/weight which is partly why you don't see any 80mm deep all aluminum rims. It is a pretty complex calculation to figure out where the crossover is and you would need to know how much time you spend in the draft of the pack, and how much you slow and accelerate for each corner and a bunch of other factors. Maybe Waterrockets is smart enough and geeky enough to do the math.
