I believe the whole bike was white, then the color red was added to some areas. The major flaw with this model year was the rear 6-speed 600EX index shifter. The 5 tiny tabs of the indexing unit would break off over time. So I replaced it with a 7/8-speed Shimano 600 rear index shifter.

To pile on here, if you still have the rear wheel and the rim is in good shape, you can have it re-built with a more modern hub. I did that with my '87 - found an Ultegra 600 hub, switched out the threaded seven speed freehub for an eight-to-ten speed one, and had it built up with new spokes and black brass nipples that almost perfectly match the originals.

They are beautiful bikes with very nice paint job. I also switched the brake cables since I'm used to modulating the front brake with the right brake lever...old school motorcyclist.

That Terry is a gem. Many people mistake it for a funny bike, and many mistake that 520 front for a 650. In my opinion, there is no better bike for a shorter rider, able to do triathlons/workout/centuries with aplomb. I have a friend who swapped the freehub on the rear for an 8/9/10, moved to 9-sp 105 STI's, RD cassette/chain, and never looks back. She's 5' tall if that. She's now at the point where she's looking for a new racing front tire.
I've got a rear rim, but I'm not sure what spoke count it is, and it's not the coppery A20 that the front is. Prettiest wheels of the entire Ironman lineup.

I suspect a mint condition 46 cm "Terry edition" Ironman may go for +$550 on Ebay. Had some spare time last year, so I completely overhauled my Terry bike and gave her a new coat of wax.

Not exactly what I was looking for, but the price was right. $200 off of CL...not the best deal I've gotten but certainly not the worst...previous owner used some sort of tacky lube on everything so I've got a bit of cleaning to do and the red bar tape has got to go. Appears to be a 1986, 54cm. Not sure on the rims. They are Araya and I'm pretty sure the 86 I had way back when had Wolbers...were Arayas standard on some of these? Anyhow, I wanted a red/white 56 or 58 for me but my son is 5'8" and this should work as a nice entry-level road bike for him

Appears to be a 1986, 54cm. Yep, '86. Tange 1 decal was blue in '86, and you can tell by the font. Not sure on the rims. '85 had "shouldered" Arayas, '86 had coppery round Araya 20A's, '87 had dark grey Wolber Super Champion Alpines, '88-'89 had dark grey Araya Hard Anodized CTL-370's. Anyhow, I wanted a red/white 56 or 58 for me but my son is 5'8" and this should work as a nice entry-level road bike for him "Entry" as far as price and getting to know road bikes, but will run with anything out there.
Want some Fubar padded silver bar tape to match that seat tube/head tube?
Get those wheels trued and tensioned, hubs packed, and you'll find out what a gem that frame is.
If those are the original Technova tires, you'll see a big difference with 700x23's, too.

I love that Grey/Silver combo, I think that's my 3rd favorite Ironman combo behind the '85 Red/Silver and of course, my beloved Miami Vice.

Here's my 87 Ironman, built up with a odd mix of parts: Brooks B-17, Nitto stem, Campy Veloce brifters, 8-speed Suntour cassette, Shimano LX rear derailleur, Tiagra caliper brakes, 105 hubs, Velocity Aerohead rims , On-One 34-48 crank, MKS touring pedals, Campy front derailleur, Soma Highway One bars, Fizik tape (crappy wrapping job courtesy: me). Second time I've built it this frame. Great riding bike.

Got her all cleaned up! The hoods cleaned up a lot easier than I expected with just some diluted bleach, a Magic Eraser, and a soft-bristle toothbrush. Still a little yellowed from age, but I'm quite content with the outcome considering there was 20+ years of sweat and grime built up on them.
Just need to get some air in the tires and she'll be all set for spring

To let you know how much I approve, and how good it looks, I just set it as my background on my main computer!!

Just picked up this one, like I needed another Ironman, that is not my size. Paint is almost perfect.
Unfortunately, PO had the gearing modified to allow a triple. He did use mostly good stuff: Ultegra 6500 triple crank and a modern LX RD.
I've got my main project in the background. Started as a "simple greenhouse" but morphed into a summer room. Paint is next, it "only" has 38 windows....

Here is my contribution. I'm the original buyer and just got her back last year from a relative so I upgraded to Ultegra STI for a few modern conveniences. I don't like the red hubs on the wheels, but for the deal I got on them there was NO way I could resist. Just bought a carbon fork for it yesterday and haven't decided whether to paint match it or not, or whether to use the fork in a threadless capacity (it may be long enough to get away with the conversion as it is before further threading and cutting). Decisions...
