Brake cables and housing for Raleigh Pro

Hey all,

My Raleigh is a 1970 Professional. I am just steps away from street readiness. My concern is: Will I need anything special or uniques in terms of brake cables or housing to make them fit this frame? Will any random cable/housing set suffice? I've never done anything with brakes besides side-to-side or up-and-down type adjustments. The brakes I'm using might be MAFAC "Racer" centerpulls or Shimano 600 sidepulls. noglider says the MAFACs for sure, so I'll probably go with those.

If you want to go original. the correct brakes for a '70 Professional are Campy Nuovo Record sidepulls according to Sheldon Brown. https://sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/professional.html The '69 Professionals used Weinmann centerpull brakes w/quick release brake levers according to the same source.

With Mafacs or Shimano 600's I do not think being original is the concern. Silver lined housing for brakes is what I would use, the trick will be possibly getting ferrules to fit the housing and the various parts w/o any binding. Some housing is of a bigger outside diameter than others. You might look at what Velo Orange has on offer.

in the late '60's there were some white Pros which came through with MAFAC Tiger brakes.

Unfortunately, being original is far less a priority than low out-of-pocket cost. I've tried to keep the overall look old school by, say, not having a black seatpost.

hello dancinmikeb,

have been meaning to ask...

iirc in 1969 or 1970 they introduced the mink raleigh pro in a limited edition of five hundred numbered machines. is this one of those? i believe these early minks did not have the brampton victor seat cluster which began the following year. the forum's raleigh experts will straighten me out if my memory is off target. ;^)

best wishes with your project!

This is a 1970, white with the three color band on the seatpost. It looks just like the '69 on Sheldon's page, but according the the serial # it's a '70. When I got it the frame, fork, and headset were the only original parts though. I have the 600 brakes on there, but the short reach may not work seeing as I have 700c instead of original spec 27" wheels.

A Professional should have been equipped with sew-ups (700c), not 27" clinchers...

thanks dancinmikeb for the additional information. i had the opportunity to use a pro just like yours for a week or so and it was fitted with mafac tiger centrepull brakes. it had a full sloping crown and no chrome. normal seat stay attachment. i recall its stem was an early 3ttt grand prix with a single allen. original tubular rims would have been weinmann wood filled.

hope you enjoy it when you complete the build!

My brother-in-law has (or had -- I need to ask) a 3 color striped white Raleigh Pro of that same vintage, and I think the brakes were early Campag. sidepulls. If you do get those, you definitely want low-compression cable housings and salmon KoolStop brake pads, for safety.
