My new 2014 Sirrus Expert Disc Carbon... with a few mods!

Hey guys!

I have wanted a Sirrus Disc Carbon ever since I first saw one. After seeing a few others post photos here I decided to check around and see if there was a local shop that had a leftover in stock. I found a few shops within driving distance and called around to get the best deal. I ended up purchasing it for $1700 which I thought was a pretty good deal.

Anyway, I had the parts from a Litespeed T5Gravel I recently built after I decided it wasn't the bike for me so I installed them on the Sirrus. I also want to swap out the brakes for something a little nicer and I have some lighter weight wheels coming next week so that should really make a difference.

Here's the bike when I brought it home at 21 lbs 6 oz.

And here it is 2 hours later after adding a few aftermarket parts. It now weighs a more respectable 18 lbs 10 oz and I expect to lose at least another pound when I add the new wheels.

Now I just need some nice weather so I can ride it!

Congrats!

Same frame geometry as Specialized's top of the line Roubaix road bike with classic endurance geometry but built for riding in an upright position.

Yours is a true performance hybrid bike that is basically a flat bar road bike.

Looks awesome. You will end up with a 17lb hybrid with disc brakes, that is an impressive weight.
So you intend to go off road a bit with the mountain gearing parts?

No, there is just not a lot of choices for flat bar shifters so I chose to just go with XT because of the reliability and weight.

I really like the looks of the stock wheels I just wish they weren't so freakin' heavy!

Beautiful looking bike.

I have some questions for you.

Did you weigh each individual item you replaced and if so, what were the respective weight savings?

How does the XT derailleur compare to the 105 and why did you make that swap?

Very nice looking bike!

How much extra coin did you have to drop to drop the extra 4 lbs?

edit: $1700 discounted from what list price?

Thank you Colonel!

I did not weigh each part as I swapped them out. I'm sure the biggest advantages came from the stem/bar and the crank.

I love the XT stuff. I use it on all my bikes. I made the swap because I wanted to upgrade the shifters and the XT shifter is not compatible with the 105 derailleur. Also, because I went with a 1x10 drivetrain I needed more range on the rear cassette and the 105 will only work with up to a 30t.

I think the bike originally sold for around $2200 if I recall correctly.

As mentioned above, the biggest weight savings was in the bar/stem combo and the crankset. The crankset was around $400 when I bought it and the bar/stem was around $200 as I got a good deal on them. Also, I'll be adding a $1K wheelset which will drop the weight another 1+ lb

I got to try one of these high end saddles one day. The stock one on this bike is horrible, I replaced it with a Cannondale CAADX saddle I got off ebay for 20 bucks including shipping.

Have you had your sitbone width measured? I found that once I was fitted for a saddle and started buying the correct size I was more comfortable no matter what saddle I was riding.

Nope, I have not. I just stick with Cannondale seats, some reason they work for me no matter which model bike it comes off of.

Hi,

where did you get that little bridge that holds the cables in front of the handlebar?

Great idea to upgrade the crank. Saving weight off of rotating weight is always the first priority for performance gains.

You've got an incredibly lightweight hybrid at a very competitive price!

Well I agree with the first part of your post but I'm not so sure about the competitive price part! Lol!

@Monstermash Great looking bike! I wonder what did you do with your Globe, which I think is one of the best looking bikes I ever saw...

I still have it. I did remove some of the components to install on the Litespeed when I sold it but I plan on rebuilding it and possibly selling it.

What is the size of the frame? If it's XL, I may be interested...I guess I'm more interested in the bare frame than the complete bike...Just don't have much left for cycling hobby this year. Your Globe visits me in my dreams every few nights...I'm either in love, or just need a good doctor...possibly both...

It's a large but there isn't much difference between the large and XL. How tall are you?

Here are the wheels I am going to use on the bike. They are the brand new 2015 Mavic Crossmax SL and they are not in stock at my LBS so I wont have them until the end of the month.

If you wanted to run a mixed road/mtb drivetrain, you could get the SL-R780 flatbar shifters. They are Ultegra level flatbar shifters. They will shift all of the 10sp. shimano road gear and if you wanted to run MTB rear gearing, you can run the 9sp shimano mtb RD and it'll shift great. This is what I'm doing on my new bike. I'm running those shifters, DA FD, XTR RD, and a 12-36 SRAM 1070 cassette. Just as long as you don't mix any dynasys stuff, you'll be golden.

I looked at the wheels you are getting, but I decided to get custom. King hubs, DT TK-540 hoops, and DT spokes.

Thanks but I'm very happy running the XT drivetrain. And yeah, I learned the hard way a few years ago you can't mix in the Dynasys stuff.

Just curious, how much do your custom wheels weigh?

I haven't a clue. I don't have them yet. I just placed the order last week. I should have them this week. Weight wasn't my concern though. I wanted strong wheels that would perhaps last a lifetime. So I built them with the DT trekking rims. They are about 100 grams heavier than some of DTs racier wheels. We used a calculator to guestimate around 1600g for the set (without the discs) but I won't know until I get them. The Chris King R45 hubs aren't exactly too light either. I'm running 32 double butted DT spokes per wheel. They'll be sweet but not racer light. I am hoping to keep my bike to around 20 lbs. This is going on a Lynskey Viale frame. This bike is being built to ride on paved trails and casual riding. I'm no long distance rider, I just wanted nice gear.
