Repainted Raleigh
Saw this bike and can't figure what it is. Limited photos - no drivetrain shots. Looks like a repaint and no decals or head badge. Asked owner about model but doubt I'd get one back

Sorry - should have said that owner said "it's a Raleigh" which means seller has no clue. In Canada if they don't know who made an old bike they say Raleigh or CCM, just as in they USA they say Schwinn.

I don't know what it is but it's very low end. Almost certainly hi-tensile steel tubing. Stamped dropouts. The front dropouts look they have holes for a wheel retention washer. Bottle bosses but no braze-ons for shift levers. Bulge formed head tube. Exposed brake nuts. Nutted hubs. Front rim looks like steel. Chainrings appear to riveted to the crankarm spider.

If you can talk the price down pretty low, it would be a decent enough transportation beater. I have always had at least one of those (currently the UO-8) in my stable, for times when I either had to haul a moderate to large load or when I was worried about security.

Yeah, that actually looks kinda nice! If it was like $20 I'd buy it, keep the bag, then sell the bike again for the same price. Maybe $5 more.

A few months back I went to see a $10.00 bike that was unidentifiable from the pictures. It turned out to be a C-Itoh. Had I known that up front, I would never have gone to look at it, but as I stood there, it occurred to me that it had rather fresh tires with virtually no wear, interesting hubs and a few parts that were good enough for a project. It also was of a size that I could comfortably put on the indoor trainer - relieving my Grand Sports from the task. On the trainer, it won't matter how heavy it is, or whether something is a little out of alignment, or whether the brakes function perfectly, and I won't mind if perspiration eats through those thick tubes in 50 years. As others have noted, there are sometimes opportunities to make lemonade from the lemons.

Price was too high in the end, but I am curious about the serial number. I always thought Raleigh started with a letter.

I really think this is not a Raleigh. That serial number convention doesn't match. I'm also not aware of any Raleigh from the 70's through the 80's that has the style of seat-stays that this bicycle has. Most Raleighs from the 70's had an arch behind the seat stays to terminate the rear brake cable for their center-pull brakes. To my knowledge, the only road models from this period that lack that feature are the Professional, and the Team Professional models. Also, the brazed on top tube guides are not typical.
Someone here is bound to recognize what this actually is, but if you passed on this because the seller was asking too much, I'm confident you made the correct call.

USAZorro I agree. Something bothered me right when I first saw it but I wasn't sure what it was. I had trouble with it being a Raleigh which is why I joked that in Canada if people don't know who made a bike they say "Raleigh". I get that it's not high end but now wondering what it is.....
