Black or Red?

Just curious, as I am undecided about this. If you were asking me about a choice for your bike—I dare say I could give you an answer straight away. The black version is photoshopped to be black, very quickly PS'd, I might add, so take that into consideration. Thanks for your opinions.

I like your quickie retouched photos! Just wondering if you're considering the red because of increased visibility or aesthetics?

black always looks sharper, and shows less dirt on panniers/bags.

red is much more highly visible.

Do you go with aesthetics or safety. Too tough a call, but if it helps, I'll be buying the Arkel Tail Rider in red...for safey.

ronorini, I was just thinking aesthetics.

theranman, I am considering the Tail Rider. A way cool rack top bag. If it fits my stuff that'll go on the rack, I'll pick it up.

Foamy,

The Tail Rider looks like an awesome rack bag, matched only by Arkel's awesome website design. Too bad their products are so expensive. That Tail Rider would probably make a nice Group Buy if it could be arranged, but alas, I don't think Arkel does that sort of thing.

Personally, I'd always go with blue.

I have heard that red bags fade to orange with exposure to much sunlight, etc. And they show dirt much more than black. Both versions have very good reflective strips - more visible than the colour of the bag, so I would go with the black.

I would have to go with Red myself. But fmarchetti4 is right, they do tend to fade to orange. Here are my red Arkels when they were new (in the West), and here they are after crossing Canada (in the East). I personally like the look of the faded bags, they got character.

Yellow? My personal preference is the red mainly for visibility and it doesn't absorb as much heat.

I definitely PREFER black, but I have to agree on the visibility and heat issues. Black tends to melt those protein bars within a very short period of time.

And btw, I see in your pics that the white water bottles ALSO faded to a nice matching orange...or would that be a Photoshop oversight?

Yes, the black absorbing heat thing does concern me. It's the major drawback as a color for panniers as I see it. Though, red is not that much better (but it is a little better). Visibility is not a big concern for me as I generally wear a bright (red or yellow-ish) jersey, though, red panniers would definitely be a plus in that department and I shouldn't discount that aspect as much as I have.

This is gonna be tough to choose.

Incidentally, those Arkels don't look bad, faded.

Thank you all again for your thoughts and opinions. Keep'em coming.
