I started commuting by bike as soon as I got my first "real" job in 91. Before that I road my bike to school (or part time jobs) on a near daily basis since the mid 70s. I probably have between 2-3 times more lifetime miles on bikes than I do on cars.

I don't know what to count as commuting or what to do about interregnums, but I was riding my bike to first grade, and I'm 38 now, and never in that time have I not had a bike I could ride anywhere I wanted.

Since 2008
Bought a new Kona Dew at that time. Rode 2 miles each day each way, in dry weather, from June until late October. Second year, I rode year round.
Couple of moves and job changes later, I'm now riding 5 miles each day each way. Also been riding with the local bike club since 2012. Did my first two Centuries last year.
Been riding my road bike for the past few months.

I started commuting back in 2010 when my car was in the shop and I dragged the bike out of the garage. Prior to that I had not ridden in about five years because of knee pain.

depends on how you define commuting. If I include middle and high school then I have nearly 20 years under my belt, but if we're only going by post high school, then it would be about 14 years. I suppose it helps that I've never owned a car, only bicycles.

3 years now. Each year, it seems, the commute keeps getting longer. First year, 2 miles (one way), then 11 miles. Second, 12 miles. This year, 19 miles. This year I can't do both ways all the time. Once I leave the safety of the strip, the neighborhoods get dangerous at night. So, for those nights, the bus is my way home. I still have to ride 1 mile from the bus stop.

Grew up riding to and from friends' houses but always rode the bus to school, lame. Bicycling as my main form of transportation was introduced to me in college; doing the math, that was only 7 years ago.

At least to a train station for over six years. I did a three mile (one way) commute for three years, and started an eight mile commute in April of this year.

Before I walked to the railway station, since I moved home, it's a little too long walking distance, so I ride
Keeps me fit

About 1 month! I try to commute everyday weather permitting. I cannot show up to work looking like a wet rat with mascara running down my face, though if I could I would! Still have yet to get in a full week. Damn that rain. I also had to take some rest days in the first few weeks due to aggravating my sciatic nerve. This made me sad. I want to ride every day! Things are looking up though, my sciatic pain has subsided so I think my rest days are over!

Great conversation! I'm complicated (like a lot of us). I've been bike-commuting daily, year-round* since 2010. I was a summer commuter going back to 2008, and a fair weather commuter back to 2004. Then going way back to to college days, I was car-free bike-commuting from 1988 to 1992 (when my daughter was born). I wish I hadn't let the big laps when she was young. And this spring, I've transitioned to a home office and bike for joy on the days I don't go to the old office.

Since April 19, 2010, so a bit over 5 years now. I started doing it 4 days a week, then all 5 workdays beginning in 2013, then gradually in worse and worse weather.

Excluding childhood and recreational riding, I've been commuting almost daily for the past 2 1/2 years. With some of the numbers I see others posting up I feel like a newbie to commuting, but I love riding about as much as I hate taking the bus, and buying a car isn't an option so I'll just keep riding

Given the birth rate worldwide, so have I!
I moved at the end of 2012 (spent Christmas Eve laying hardwood laminate in the new place so we could bring furniture in), and have been a "full-time" bike commuter since my first workday of 2013, so that is 2 1/2 years.
Not really "full" full-time, but 80-90%. Sometimes I have to drive for the kids, but since I store my car at work, I can't wuss out because of weather or laziness.

I started last year, riding in once a week. I'm trying to step it up this year but there are times when I need my car to run errands or attend offsite meetings.

I won't count the years of riding before age 16 and my first official job at the A&P because it wasn't really commuting.
But started cycling to work in 1970 and have ridden to virtually every job I've had since then. So, 45 years.

I have been bike commuting since March of 2012. I had ridden my bike to work prior to that but only sporadically. I decided to go full bike commuting in 2012 because I enjoy riding my bike and I had seen another person riding all weather, all year long. I can not do all weather(snow on the road stops the riding).
