Riding MTB without the FD
Hello everyone. I've been surfing the internet trying to find a clear answer about riding without a Front Derailleur. I tried it to see for myself (stayed at mid ring as others did), so far I have no problems with it. Question is, is it safe to ride without the FD?

It all depends on what set up you have on your drive and how many gears you are using on the rear and what kind of riding you are doing. If you have a decent rear mech that can hold the chain tension well enough it is possible to get away without the FD. Otherwise look to running a single ring up front and using some sort of chain device to keep the chain in place. Many MTB riders run a single ring but will often use a chain device or bash guard to keep the chain on when the going gets rough.

Agreed with Kinki - only downside is it may jump down to your first chainring if you hit some rough patches on the trail.

I've been running a 1x setup for a long time. Bash on the outside and just a plastic jumpstop on the inside. No problems.

I ran 1x on mtb for a while, no bash guard or chain watcher. Dropped occasionally with stock ramped/cuttooth chainring. Dropped chain practically never when I changed to a singlespeed specific chainring.

Rode on a rough road today, chain did jumped, better start looking for a Bash Guard and Chain Guide. Thanks for the replies guys.
