Recommendations for a 1x9 speed groupset for CX build?

Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". Recommendations for a 1x9 speed groupset for CX build?

Hi there, anyone have any recommendations on what works pretty good for a 1x9 speed groupset with a 11-32 cassette on a cx frame? Will be running disc brakes.

I'm not too picky with shifters, as long as they work and are reliable but again, would prefer something where I just shift with the one hand, and the other side, either gutted or completely removed.

Will be piecing this together, combination of new/used stuff.

I recently downsized my 2x10 to a 1x10. I'm using a Race Face wide/narrow chainring in hopes of avoiding any kind of other chain retention strategy at the front. Trying to keep it clean and simple. The Race Face chainring will get a thorough test of it's ability tonight.

Later this week I'm getting a 9 speed SLX Shadow rear derailleur to further enhance chain retention. I've read that the combination of the wide/narrow chainring plus a clutch type derailleur pretty much does the trick.

I aquired a set of 5600 brifters with a broken front shifter (the brake function still works though) for REALLY cheap for this project. I didn't want to use a random left brake lever for aesthetic reasons. The "new" brifters will be going on a with a fresh set of cables/housing as soon as the new derailleur arrives.

Wow, that sounds interesting and exciting! Can you please post pics of your build once it's done? I want to get a close look on what the wide/narrow chainring looks like. Thanks!

Shimano's are the most common .for post crash spares. .. w/o the front lg-sm difference a shorter cage may do

Here's a quick phone grab of the front section from a couple of weeks ago, which is how it currently stands. I'm going to mount the chainring on the inside so the chain doesn't "cross chain" to the easier gears. Everything is still in beta.

I'll share some more pics as things progress.

Thanks for the share Justin! What crank is that Race Face chainring sitting on? And what 9 speed rear cassette are you going to be using? Thanks!

P.S. If I have access to a Shimano 105 double crankset 53/39, is it possible for me to remove the 53 ring, or is it fixed into the crank and/or will it leave too much a gap/space from the crank which may cause problems for the chain?

I'm using the stock FSA Gossamer cranks that came with the bike. Nothing terribly fancy, but they get the job done. Right now I have a 42 up front and an 11-28 in the rear. It's a 10 speed though.

You could just remove the outer ring and run the 39. You'll need new, shorter chainring bolts and something to keep your chain from coming off when things get bumpy, muddy, whatever... That's why I got the wide/narrow chainring + clutch type rear derailleur.

I'm only finding 4 bolt 104 pcd MTB crank style ones.

Universal Cycles started carrying them recently, and they had the best price. They're local for me, so it was a win-win.

It works great too. I raced on a very bumpy course last night and had no chain drops. I can't wait to see how this set up does in the mud.

I'm putting the upgrade path on hold for now. I like the smaller 105 rear derailleur and the Race Face chainring is doing the trick. I have 60 days to decide if I want to keep the SLX Shadow rear derailleur, so in that time I'm going to try my hardest to throw the chain off. I'm also strongly considering a BURD as an alternative. It's ticking all the right boxes for me and my needs.

Have you looked at Gevenalle shifters? They offer 1x9, including 1x9 with full hydraulic brakes. The functionality is outstanding and the prices are very reasonable.

Yuppers. I have Andy, strongly considering them. Thinking of the CX1 V with discs (but mechanical), just cause, where I live, it gets real colllldddd and last thing I want is hydraulic to freeze up on me.

I've got a similar problem, but I was thinking of using a spare Dura-Ace 7700 9spd (short cage) RD (or its Ultegra counterpart) & 12-25 cassette in back with a 38T Race Face or Wolf Tooth wide-narrow chainring up front. Thinking of using a Dura-Ace 7700 bar-end shifter because I don't want to buy too many parts for this.


I'm not planning on doing any serious racing, but what kind of potential problems will I be running into? Should I consider using a MTB RD? I usually keep MTB and road bike stuff apart, so I don't know how it'll all gel together. How will a MTB RD interact with a bar-end shifter?

I'm using an XT 9 speed rear derailleur with an 11-32 9 speed cassette with a Dura Ace 7700 bar end on my Poprad. It shifts perfectly fine in index mode on dirt/gravel, but I can't see racing with it (I'm not a racer anyway). I do find that if I get sloppy with my shifts the indexing alone sometimes will not click in exactly. So, it will go up two cogs or stay in the gear I'm in, hanging up between gears. This happens mostly when I'm shifting while climbing. If I pay attention to what I'm doing, no problems.
I would say that if you have the parts, use what you have and if it works, you're good to go! If not, then maybe move on to an MTB derailleur.
BTW, I am going to 1x9 on this bike, removing the big ring and retaining the 39t. I will be using a BBG Bash Guard and a Jump Stop as a budget move. If I find I like the setup I'll spring for the narrow/wide chainring.

Try it out without the MTB derailleur. You probably won't need it...
