That would be the day. But that would never work in Canada. I think you need Spanish weather or better.

I'd love a car free central part of town.

That is a great idea where it is feasible but I don't think it would work everywhere. But even where it may not be possible in some of the world's vast cities, maybe there could be motor vehicle free zones.

I don't think so. The city I live in has removed cars from the centre too and it works, but I'm afraid the weather isn't very Spanish.

The central core of Oulu Finland is car free... there are parking lots around the central core for those that don't bike, and there are copious bike paths all over town that get you to the same destination, without having to "share the road."

I guarantee that it gets cold in Oulu.

My town is car free from the cycleways, and cycle free from the roads.

The problem isn't car's or bikes. It's putting the two together.
cycleways do not belong on roads. #miltonkeynes

I think the better idea is to eliminate lanes of traffic used for cars.

Remove an entire lane on the outside and remove all side of the road parking spots and watch how many people stop driving.

that would be akin to political suicide. Not saying it's not a good idea.

doing this thru an entire city, yes

Find a neighborhood that's used as a shortcut that has a decent amount of cycling traffic

When people complain, say that going around is an option.

What, pray tell, is "Spanish weather?"

Pontevedra is in Galacia, which is in northwest Spain. Temps can get down in the 40s. The spring can be quite wet there, with some months seeing rainfall well over a foot due to its proximity to the coast.

Having spent 7 weeks touring in Andalucia, I can tell you the climate of even that territory varies widely. Also spent time in other parts of the country.

BTW...If you have never spent time in Spain, this is accurate in a lot of cities:

"....no revving engines or honking horns, no metallic snarl of motorbikes or the roar of people trying make themselves heard above the din – none of the usual soundtrack of a Spanish city."

I remember being in Granada way back in 2008 during a train trip in the country. It was particularly loud back then, especially with students and other young people riding noisy scooters. In certain areas, shouting in order to be heard by the person standing next to you was a reality. The city has since adopted traffic restrictions in the center of the city. Sevilla had a bad traffic problem when I started and ended a tour there back in 2000. I hear it's still bad. I left town early on a Sunday morning so I escaped the worst of it. But when I finished the tour I had to deal with it. Avoided going through the heart of the city.

There is a stretch of road, in the southern end of the county I live in. That bans vehicles', on the weekends. I wish there were more situations like that.
