Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So let me get this right...

According to Pcad, the ranking from top to bottom is:

7900 Di2
6700
7900
6700 Di2

Yes?

6700 DI2 is clearly #2 better than 7900 and almost the same cost.

Some of us would rather spend money on looks related to bikes (the minor difference between 6700 and 7900 Di2) and then drive cars that lack soul or performance.

That's part of the long story Short version: I bought the DA Di2 group for the R3SL last summer, but when the frame was stripped they found a pretty bad gash from a dropped chain (part of why I wanted Di2 ). I sent the frame off to Calfee for repair, but I had a big week-long ride coming up in Idaho, and the bike wouldn't be ready by then, so, in the meantime... I convinced myself to get the R5 frame and put the Di2 on it instead. When the R3SL came back, I didn't build it back up until Ultegra Di2 was available.

You are correct though that the R3 and the R5 are extremely similar in ride feel. Frankly I can't feel the difference. There's no way I would have gotten the R5 if the issue with the damaged frame and my planned ride hadn't forced the issue.

Since they are so similar, I kept the R5 with compact gearing 50/34 and a 11/28 cassette, and put a standard crank with a 12/27 on the R3, so I use that around town and on flat rides.

I never really considered getting an aero bike like the S2/3/5. My body shape and "aero" just do not go together without massive amounts of mocking. I get enough of that as it is.

Jim thanks for the information. I drop the chain on my Cervelo and was thinking about getting a catcher? Wonder if the chain drop issue is related to design issues? I have 7800 but added a 7900 compact crank.

Incorrect. I didn't buy it until the price had dropped about 35%. It had been out for 2+ years before I got it.

How can this be, when you are the Mayor of Vaporware Junction? Are we experiencing the thrifty side of Uncle Pcad?

I'll just add that by the time it gets to retail users, it's been used a lot. Raced, ridden in bad weather etc.
