Yea I try to too. The rear tyre has flat fighter technology(I have replaced the old one in photo) I think it gives a bit more to the package, so I think blackwall it is, as soon as they start to look old they will fit where I am going with the bike and that is, a grubby old broken looking commuter for the days where it will be locked in some less than desirable places, a junky looking bike that will ride very nicely.

Just finished a rebuild of a sweet 1997 Trek Multitrack 730. A really fun project, and they're great frames to start with. Wanted to build it up as a do-anything, daily rider. I think it turned out pretty well.

I just now saw this post.

The one on the left is a 19" frame with an approximately 48cm seat-tube and 55-56cm effective top-tube. I bought it new in 1995 and road it for 12 years, never realizing it was way too small!!

The one on the right is a 21" frame with a 53.5cm seat-tube and a 57cm effective top-tube. I bought it on the day I took that photo and rode it for a year or so before buying a brand new frameset. It's also too small in the vertical plane (too much seatpost and stem sticking up) but about the right size in the horizontal plane. The next larger size, a 23" I believe, would be about right in height but with a way too long top-tube. Those old Multitracks have MTB geometry with relatively longer top-tubes compared to road bikes.

Upgraded rear d, crank, brakes, and controls... a mix of Deore LX and DX parts. Was originally fitted with Deore CX and lesser brakes which were serviceable and as new as the bike but not as nice as the spare parts I had kicking around.

My Iron Horse "Journey", originally bought from an Oshman's Sporting Goods store in Dallas. I did complete the Capitol City Century in Springfield, IL on this back in the late 1990's. With the addition of the Wald twin baskets, kickstand, handlebar end mirror, a headlight, and my bluetooth stereo speaker, it's a getting more and more use for commuting and grocery runs....and the 10 miler or so I'm heading out on now on this beautiful morning. One of these day's I'll put the new front tire on. The saddle was $1 from Goodwill two years ago.

65er the bike is looking even better(I really like that model of LX shifter/brake lever combo), my Raleigh is of a similar ride position to this, though I may change that soon.
I think the comp upgrade should keep going for a good long while, my Raleigh is all base model stuff which I will change at the end of winter here in Auckland(No snow but lots of rain) and give it a spruce.
I will keep it as a knock around, lend out, back up bike. I have put on an old Blackburn rear rack, might put on some lowrider type front racks if all goes well making it a real grocery getter. Thanks for the reply.

I really like hearing about good bikes bought for cheap, and then hearing about how perfect they are made for the people who own them with just a few upgrades.

One more 1997 Trek 730. Origin 8 drop bars, 28-38-48 M411 crank to replace stock 22-32-42, triggers to replace grip shifters.

Those LX 7 speed shifters are really nice... they were made when Shimano was going all out to sell indexed systems and the quality is very high. My first year XTR STI shifters are of this same quality level.

My friend's wife had an unfortunate mishap with her Trek 7.2 so the BRC is out on an extended loan so she can commute to and from work... it fits her very well and if she really likes it I'll make her an offer she cannot refuse and parts wise it is actually a nicer bike.

Hi a small update, I have not had much "tool" time lately.
Here is the Trek with new wheels and Schwalbe Land Cruiser's 700 x 40c

I am going to put on a NOS RX100 front Derailleur and then try to get the RX100 Brifters that I have working, although I do not know what to do there, will have to look it up.
I have also picked up this NZ designed Reiker,

It came with another one(smaller) that has a full "Blue" LX groupset on it. This will go on a Marin Bolinas Ridge from about '96, and if this frame fits me it may get full XT 8/9 spd V-Brake group.

How about an "89? It's a Shogun Metro AT, just put on new tires, grips, saddle, freewheel, and chain. I have some origin 8 drop bar ends with tan tape to match the saddle, in the mail. I like the tan with that mint green frame!

Hey guys I am nearly clear of some flippers so I in the next month hope to get The Giant Innova, Trek Mutitrack and the Reiker, finished as in riding and safe, not looking pretty.

Got a nice wheel-set with some 28mm detonators and a longer alloy post . Also have some 8 speed shifters coming and some v-brakes.

Will record progress. But even as i got it its under 12kg.

the crankset is kinda cool, its like a 5 arm compact triple BCD is definitely a lot less than 130, closer to 110.! with those chainring diameters on her I would have expected a 4 arm crank.

here she is hanging up waiting for the final pieces to arrive.

28mm will be good. I had those on for a while and it rode very nice...smooth but held the road well. I switched mine to v-brakes as well. It was a good and easy upgrade that made the bike a bit more modern.

I don't know if there's anything special about the cranks on these bikes. If it's like mine, it has the 42/34/24 chainrings. I found the stock gear range with a 7 speed 11-28 cassette to be way to wide for the trail and around town riding I do. I switched the cassette to a 7 speed 12-21 and the gear range tightened up but the bike was more fun to ride.

It's a good bike. I will keep watching this thread for future mods.
