Left gear switch not working

Hello! I have a Mongoose Term and my left gear switch stopped working recently, it has a lot of resistance when I try to switch and then just goes straight back to the lowest setting. I'm asking here because I want to know if I can fix it easily or if I may need to bring it into a shop. Thanks!

I would check inside the shifter (and elsewhere) to be certain that the shift wire is not fraying. It is very difficult to get out if the end breaks off.

It does look slightly frayed, but not very much at all

Well, that says it all. Change it. Slightly frayed is too frayed. There is no such thing as not very much at all
