I have a Marlin 4...it's a nice bike, but has its own flaws and perks. I bought mine with upgrades in mind. Another reason is that I can easily convert it to a decent touring style bike...and back to mtb as needed. So kinda a two in one. There are cheap parts on this bike that should be upgraded as necessary. The one big thing that bothers me is the paint. At first I loved the look of the matte paint...the problem is, it's a thin cover. Anything that touches it, scratches. Take a good hard look at other options. I didn't have much of a choice as in my area, bike shops are rare.

You really want an air fork in this day and age. You mightn't notice anything if you're new to suspension forks but the riding experience will nothing like an air one. If we are serious about buying a bike we expect to ride for years on a regular basis I think it makes sense to just bite the bullet and go with the later technology.

It is low end, and the main problem will be "SR Suntour M-3030, coil spring"

I have no regrets with my Trek Marlin 4, even with its budget components. As mentioned in my first post, I purchased with upgrades in mind as I see fit. The Suntour m3030 front shock is about as cheap of a fork that you can get, however, I have no plans to change that out in the immediate future. I find its ok for my style of riding..when it gets bothersome, then find another to replace. I don't know your style of riding, but if it's really mountain rough roads..you will want to upgrade. What do I use my bike for? 70% road, 20% soft off road, 10% beach. So, I'm running slicks mostly..with the knobbies at hand for if I wanna go off road. If you can, go to as many bike shops as possible and ask lots of questions. Gather your choices and take them out for a test drive, then compare. Good luck!
