Geoffrey Butler
So I wander into one of my LBS hunting grounds yesterday and casually ask if there is interesting that has come by.
The owner, without saying a word, goes into the back room and comes out with a Geoffrey Butler over his shoulder - my size.
It will need repainting ( I think) - Universal Mod. 68 brake calipers and levers, TTT stem and bars, Campy record derailleurs, cranks, pedals and two bolt seatpost.
Two wheels - high flange campy hubs and Fiamme rims.
I think the rims are done, and I really don't need any more high flange hubs ( can't believe I said that!).
My jaw hit the floor and the owner stands with a grin on his face a mile wide - some guy came in and used it as part of the trade in and payment for a mountain bike!?
Trying to figure out what to pay him for this - needs a good cleaning - probably paint - I'm thinking around $150 - anyone???
If anyone knows some history I'd appreciate it - CR website is silent on 'em.
However, I have a Claud Butler, so I think adding a Geoffrey Butler would be a neat twist. Also, if I paint it anyone know if there is any chance of getting transfers for it??

What is the frameset's tubing pedigree? It sounds like a great bike, and if the parts are in good shape, $150 would be a good deal for you. I really like the part about the frame being just your size ...
I recall seeing one or two G. Butlers in the early 1970s, and if I recall correctly, there is no relation to Claud, but I could be wrong.

It's 531 - so I'm happy with that.
I don't think there is any relation at all to Claud Butler, just think it would be fun to have two different Butler bikes!!

1) Geoffrey Butler is a retail shop in the U.K., and still have some
frames built under their label. The current frames are probably
jobbed out.
2) The shop (GB bikes) is still operational, URL is:

I believe that one CR'er responded with a link to photo's
of his Butler.
There was some discussion of Dennis Sparrow (never heard

GB stands Gerry Burgess a very reputable parts maker from Great Britain. I'm not sure of the total extent of his manufacturing but GB stems and bars are common on higher line Carltons.

I'm pleased you are showing interest in Geoffrey Butler Cycles. Between 1964 sand 1968 I worked for them on Saturdays and School Holidays. They were located at 9 South End Croydon and have moved twice since the 1960's. Geoffrey Butler was Claud Butler's brother and opened the shop in 1955. Unfortunately, I never met Geoffrey because he passed away by 1964. John Pratt was the proprietor (sadly he passed away aged 52), Burt Sullivan was employed by the shop. I happy times working and racing in those years, so much so I decided to become an development electrical engineer. I hope this gives you a little more information about this great brand.

There were a few different builders, but Cliff Shrubb was a primary builder and he was well regarded. I believe that he built from the mid/late '60s GB until the late '70s or early '80s? I used to have a really nice late '60s example with a very nice variation on the fastback seatstay.....

A friend has a G Butler he purchased through Omnibus Outfitters/ Steve Kassner in Door County WI.in the mid 1970's.
Kassner might have been importing them in small quantities or actually been the US agent for them- story is a bit murkey.
Nicely built and finished bicycles frames.
Only seen a couple of them through the years.

Here is my Geoffrey Butler. It is a 72 and that is about all I know, I have it built up with Shimano 600 Arabesque, Dia-copm centerpulls, SR seat post, and Nitto Dynamic II stem with some GB Randonneur bars. Acorn bags with a Brooks Flyer.
