I prefer the Minoura (SP?) because it is much easier to judge the adjustment of radial and lateral true at the same time. To me it would be worth the extra $20.
I use the much more expensive Park TS-2 with the addition of drop-outs and a QR Skewer tightened down to secure the wheel like it will be in actual use.
I have seen experienced wheel builders on the road use the frame/fork and a couple zip-ties get a wheel better than industry standard of 0.5 mm in radial and lateral true while having better than 10% spoke tension balance. Skill, practice, patience, quality parts, and experience all play roles in this "equation".

I did not notice that the Minoura had more functionality than the Performance brand. That sells me on it. A TS-2 would be wonderful but I don't think that I would use it nearly enough to warrant the price. Like you kind of said, it is about skill/experience.

I, too, would opt for the Minoura. I like the design and functionality better, and I've always found Minoura equipment to be top-notch. That's why I'd also recommend their dishing-gauge. It's just plain nice. I finally opted for the Park TS-2 myself, wondering if it was worth the expense for my anticipated usage. As it turns out, a day doesn't go by that it's not in use. It reminded me of how much fun building, and working on, wheels is. I'll soon be living in a house filled with 'em! Me thinks I'll have to start selling them soon. LOL.

I've been using the spin doctor from performance for quite a while now with no problems. I paid less than $20 for it with a coupon and sale price. I only true a dozen or so wheels a year so if your usage is high, the Minoura looks like a better unit.

Nashbar lists the Minoura at $59.95 in their latest catalog. There goes another $10 off the price.

I have the Performance (Spin Doctor) model and have built a number of wheels with it and used it frequently for truing. I have no problems with it. However, I have no experience with the Minoura and it may well be better and worth the extra $10 at this point.

I'm just getting the Minoura for my first wheel build. It was the cheapest that had most of the features of the top end Park one.

If people can build wheels with old forks and cable ties, then I'm sure this will be brilliant! I'll let you know how I get on once I start!
