Noise from front wheel

Today while I was riding a weird loud scraping noise started coming from my front wheel, at first I assumed it might have something to do with the bearings in the hub however I'm not sure. This happened both while pedaling and coasting but was intermittent. After I got back home I took the front wheel off and spun it to try to see where the noise was coming from and it actually sounds like it's coming from the rim and not the hub. I have no clue what this could be, but after fiddling with the axle and putting the wheel back on I took it for a ride around the block and couldn't hear the noise while riding,I can still hear it though spinning the wheel off the bike. It kind of sounds like something metal is loose flopping around inside the rim. I'm no mechanic and relatively new to biking so I figured I'd ask you guys what you think I should do. Maybe I should just bring it in to my LBS?

If you have double wall aluminum rims, it's possible that a small bit of debris broke off and is now rattling round inside the rim. This is very common, and you can hear it rattle if you take the wheel off and shake. However you rarely hear it while riding at anything over a few miles per hour, because the aster spinning wheel forces it out and holds it against the outer wall.

Shake the wheel and see if this sounds like the problem. If so, you can sometimes shake whatever it is out a spoke hole, or the valve hole if you remove the tire. Otherwise forget about it.

If it's a double wall rim, there may be a piece of debris rattling around in it.
Since you didn't specify any details about WHAT rim............

They're weinmann 913-622/700c rims, those aren't double wall are they? When I first heard the noise I was going about 18mph. I can hear the noise when I shake the wheel or flip it upside down.
