Dura Ace 7400 wheelset. Damaged?
C&V, I need your help!
I'm in the process of gathering parts for a dura ace 740- series build, and I have been having trouble coming across hubs that aren't Uniglide with dura ace specific threading. In my searching, I have come across these potentially useable hubs that unfortunately have rims attached to them.
https://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...ht_1638wt_1167
According to the seller, they have the elusive Hyperglide/Uniglide accepting freehub body, which is threaded both on the inside and outside. The problem is that the freehub body appears to be damaged, and is missing a visible chunk. This is visible at the following link:
https://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/...0,0,0&format=0
There are also other issues, as 7400 hubs should not be 8 speed to the best of my knowledge. Should I run the other way, or will they be useable?

If the cassette body is removable, it'll require a TL-FH10 splined remover to pull the fixing bolt/socket out from the inside for the transplant, unlike the more standard 10mm allen key mounting. Sheldon has a few articles on this:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#transplant
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html#hubs ("Freehub Body/Hub Shell Compatibility")
Harris also shows the tool on their site:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/tools/cassette.html
That said, if you do succeed in removing it, Sheldon's site would imply that you'd be forced into locating another DA-specific replacement.

Yeah, that crack in the rim in pic#8 isn't lookin' too smooth either.
Wait, you only want them for the hubs? Ok, never mind.

Just as I thought.
Kurt, I have looked through Sheldon's compatibility list and I don't see any such thing as a 7 speed Dura ace hub that is hyperglide compatible. Is this correct?
I may just be better off using the 600 hubs I already have with a freehub transplant. I already have a Hyperglide/Uniglide dual-compatible freehub body that should fit it.

"One way or another though, that auction you posted is proof enough that there is such a thing as a 7-speed, HG-cassette-compatible, Dura-Ace rear hub."
I disagree. Best not to assume that the seller didn't do something dumb like try to thread on something that don't fit!

1. I have no clue what the OP is looking for. He wants to do a 740- build but doesnt want a 7403.
2. As far as I've been able to tell Shimano NEVER made a Dura Ace HyperGlide 7-speed hub. If its HyperGlide its 8-speed. Period.
3. There may have been a short run of 126mm HyperGlide hubs but these are 8-speed.
4. Regardless of it being a Dura Ace hub or cassette the shift levers have NOTHING to do with it. Dura Ace shifters need to paired with a Dura Ace derailleur. Thats it. Everything else can be whatever.
5. It appears there are 8-speed Uni-Glide specific hubs as well
I'm confused. The OP doesnt want Dura Ace specific Uniglide threading but wants 740- hubs which are Dura Ace.
So what the big deal, you want 7-speeds? Jusr remove the low gear cog.

I have a 7 speed, shimano 105 hub with a 7spd HyperGlide cassette. It was factory equipped on my 1990 Trek 1420. Maybe I am not understanding what you are saying?

Ah, I thought you were saying the entire line. I just misunderstood you.

That doesn't sound like something I'd expect from Shimano.
EDIT: I'm looking at the photo now. The width of that cassette body is obviously for 8-speed. Learn something every day.

I just thought there was such a thing as a 740- dura ace hub that was 7-speed and hyperglide compatible. I wanted to stay with 7-speed because I have a set of 7-speed dura ace shifters and the 8-speed shifters are a bit rich for my blood right now.
I could easily run a 7402 or 7403 hub with only 7 speeds, through the use of spacers or just to run 8-speeds in friction mode. I was also previously leery about cold-setting the frame to fit a 7403, but it's a small jump, from 126 to 130, so 2mm on each side is barely a concern.
And Kurt, there are 8-speed Uniglide hubs as you have found, but judging by how few seem to be around, they were mostly Hyperglide/Uniglide hybrids. The 8-speed Uniglide DA cassettes aren't particularly common, but there's a few on the 'bay right now:

I think the 7402 is the special DA 8-speed uniglide hub that is compatible with nothing else. The 7403 uses a special DA specific freehub and normal 8/9/10 speed cassettes. You can change a 7402 into a 7403 if you have the special tool and can find the special freehub.
I have a 7402 wheelset and was trying to convert it to 7403 for awhile but it seems to be easier to find the 7402 cassettes than the special freehub so I think I'll just leave it as-is and try to stash a few spare cassettes.

Don't forget the seller is wasting $35 of your money for shipping those junk rims. if he takes the hubs out of the wheels he can shipp them USPS express for $4.95.

I've got one of these Dura Ace hubs, it is 7 speed and 32 hole, and the 12 or 13 screws on...it doesn't need/use a lock ring. Came on my new Tomasini back in 1990 and was used for years before I rebuilt the wheel with a 8 speed hub. PM me if you are interested and make me an offer for the hub, QR, and Cassette. I can send photos if you want. I seldom rode that bike so the hub look and the berarings feels great,

Again, thanks to all who contributed information. Dura ace can be a strange beast at times, so thanks for educating me.
