This CL poster has to be high.

$750? C'mon. My oldest brother had one of these when we were kids, it was fun to make engine sounds while riding and shifting with the suicide shifter, because it was like a car shifter, but I think the bike sold for less than $100 new.

The nice thing about bannana seats is you could ride double.

Maybe I'll offer $45 if it's in good shape.

Having a mid-life crisis?
Have plenty of cash?
Spend the money on something frivolous.
Achieve happiness for a short period.
Then try again.

It's quite common.

A friend of mine is selling a repainted Lemon Peeler for $1000. All original parts.

It's fun going parts shopping with him. Digging through parts bins and such. "See, these are the original Krate pedals. The ones on that bike are repros...."

what is the allure of these bikes? Is it simply nostalgia or is there some way a full grown adult could comfortably ride one of these for more than 5 minutes?

I see them on CL and eBay all the time fetching insane amounts.

I see them in Chicago CL here and there, and I'm wondering the same thing. I get shelling out a huge amount for a nice vintage roadie (because you can actually ride it), but for a bike like that?

Do *adult* people ride these? What gives?

No, that's something many of them won't do - ride an NOS/absolutely mint saddle, or for that matter, an absolutely mint restoration.

Yes. Seriously.

How is it different than the dude who has a 5k track bike hanging in his "loft" apartment that never gets ridden? nostalgia is different for everyone.

1) If I had a 5K+ track bike, it would get ridden, and ridden a lot.
2) Those old Schwinn's are fugly, period.
3) People must be crazy.

Just IMHO.

FWIW, this thread, by negative example, shows why I continue to be interested in in C&V forum. Pretty much, the emphasis here is on bikes that are to be ridden fairly regularly, not precious examples preserved in amber.

Not that there is anything wrong with that philosophy or sector, but not my bag.

Why do I think of "The 40-year-old Virgin" and all his unopened action figures? Though I do wish I had the Raleigh Chopper I bought for $10 when I was a lad. I'd skid the back tire bald again

The seat on that Schwinn looks pretty trashed.

Those and Raleigh Choppers were the hot tickets, but I think my gold Raleigh Fireball was prettier and rode better.

So, are those stupid OCC bikes, lowriders and stuff like that going to be "collectibles" in 2030? Bikes are meant to ride. Action figures, it's pretty dorky no matter what the age.
