NOS Tange fork -- crown race loose

1" threaded Tange chrome fork:

I've now tried three crown races: a Campy, then a Ritchey and a generic headset from a Japanese Bianchi too. All three races are loose, and not just enough to spin, but to slide around the base of the steerer a little bit. Do I have a small steerer on this fork?

The shop says to keep my fork in the trunk and try to fit every headset I come across. That's pretty disconcerting advice.

Is this a new fork? Have you measured the fork crown seat with a set of calipers? There are different sizes of fork crowns and hopefully you just need to find the correct headset for your fork. If the fork is undersized from the factory (unlikely) or someone made it too small by over-zealous cutting there are still options but I wouldn't do anything until you know the current size of the fork crown seat.

Sounds like a 26.4mm fork and 27.0mm races.

It's brand new.

I'll look for a 26.4

You might need an older Stronglight, they mad a variation that had a reduced crown race diameter.

If it just rotates verses rattle loose, I have had to peen a series of craters for lack of a better term to snug up a crown race on a bad boy old Italian fork. Be sure to place them to do the job, not too high and not too low, inspect the crown race first.

repechqe: THAT is a risky approach! How do you ensure concentricity!

Samwiches: Pics would help.

If there's no air gap, or in other words if its finger tight, raising up the metal doesnt interfere with concentricity. I've had good luck 'punching' evenly spaced dots with a philips head screw driver.

Then I guess a man has to know his limitations.

It has rescued many a customer's steel fork for me, I would not try it on Al Alloy or carbon of course...

With the exception of one guys Windsor, I unbolted the brake and removed it and the crown and all below dropped to the floor.... Thrilling.

The Velo Orange Grand Cru uses a split 26.4 crown race that might solve your problem if you have room for its 42mm stack height. It sure is nice to be able to install a crown race with just your fingers.

A serious approach, chuck the steerer into a lathe and knurl the ring. Basically a fancy version of Jim's answer.

That's what I thought at first, but the OP states he tried a Campy race and found it loose as well. AFAIK, Campy never made a 27.0 JIS crown race.

Interesting... you'd be using the tape as a shim. Would that work? When I've tried to use teflon tape for unusual fixes like this, the tape tends to disintegrate.

once you have measured and found the correct sized headset, and if it's still loose, then you should know that I've had success with red locktite to get a loose crown race to sit still
