what are the widest 27" tire available?
did a search, no results.
It's looking as though any 27 x 1 1/4 is the biggest I can get, which would mean Paselas or Michelin, which is fine. What I'm really wondering is does anybody have firsthand experience with some big, fat tires they bought for a 27" wheelset?

Niagara has some street tread 27X1-3/8 tires which I found to be just as large as a typical 26
x1-3/8.
The Bell Streetster available from Wal-Mart is quite large too; it's marked 27X1-1/4 but says 27
x1-3/8 backward on the inside.
The Bell is kevlar belted. Both are fairly thick, low tpi tires. Tough but maybe a bit of extra rolling drag.
EDIT: These tires are a both a hair under 29mm on an ordinary Araya rim.
I did not find the Pasela so large. I actually thought I had a mismarked 1-1/8.

I have a set of the Club Roost Cross Terra, a knobby-ish 1-3/8 tire on a bike I use for light rail trail commuting type rides. I know of a gal who used them on a cross country loaded tour and really liked them. She only got about 1500 miles before they blew out though. I don't know if that's good or bad for loaded touring.

My all time favorites were the Specialized Tri-Cross 27 x 1 3/8!
Sadly, not made anymore.
So I used their Armadillo 27 x 1 1/4 on my Mutt, and they seem large for a 1 1/4, but I haven't mic'ed them to compare. I also used them because they are NOT blackwall, as all other quality 27 x 1 1/4's seem to be.
(Maybe Michelins aren't all black, but no one around here carries them.)
They have a nice, brick red colored sidewall. Not gumwall of yore, but still not all black.

I have these:
https://www.mec.ca/Products/product_d...=1244812314530
listed as 27X 1 3/8 but they measure up at only a hair wider than 32 mm on my rims, inflated to 60lbs.

Great thread! I happily ran Schwinn 27x1-3/8" knobbies on the Peugeot, and they were almost as good on dirt roads as on asphalt. When they wore out, I was unable to find similar replacements, so I am currently using smoother Vittoria 27 x 1-1/4" tires, but hoping someday to return to the wider knobbies.

The Niagara 27 - 1 3/8 tires are heavy. Even though I am cheap, I avoid that particular tire.

This must have been a while ago. A few years ago the nominally 27 x 1-1/4 Pasella was also marked 630-30 and measured a little under 27mm on a Super Champ Mod 58 rim. The current ones are 630-32 and measure 31.8mm on the same rim.

got some sunlite 27 x 1 3/8 at a local shop, and while i think the tire will suit me fine, it's not quite as wide as i was hoping. it is, however, quite a bit "taller" than the dry-rotted specialized touring tires i replaced, which will make it a heck of a lot easier to ride around this cratered southern hellworld.
