BITD they weren't 29ers, they were 700C mountain bikes. "29er" is fairly recent nomenclature. Specialized also made the Rock Lobster with that wheel size, I believe, and there may be others.

.... why does everyone seem to persevere with the long and low racing-esque position on these bikes with flat bars? Surely they are redundant now for going out and really hammering on, or racing, but are perfectly suited to comfy cruising and stuff like that. Are risers sacrilege?
I agree, long and low isn't the best for 'bombing down hills' but these aren't DH bikes, they're made for going UP.
Remember, too that these are 26" bikes from the era when 100mm was considered a long-travel fork.
You want upright and comfy? get an 800-series Trek or a Giant Iguana. I tried a shorter, higher setup when i moved in to the 'city' and the bike didn't like it one bit. It made it both hard to steer, and twitchy and unstable once you were in a corner.
I went back to the 140mm/-5* with a 30mm riser bar, threw on some K-Rad BMX tires; Even with lights, a rack, and a mudguard, it still checks in under 25lbs, and it's an absolute weapon as a city bike.

That's because the 'long-and-low' is the classic XC race position. Bikes like the M2 Stumpjumper, @WimVDD 's Project 20, and (my own) F-1000 are built to be good climbers, and fast on the flats. That's the primary mission of an XC race bike.

I may have posted this before but I just finished getting my '93 Bridgestone MB 1 road ready again. The bike is pretty much stock other than the tires, grips, brake pads, and pedals. I really like the Crank Brothers Stamp 1 pedals, the kool stop pads, and the Schwalbe marathon supreme touring tires. The ODI grips aren't bad either.

I'm gunna need to see more of this Hot. I had one from 94-98, loved and thrashed it. The warranty replacement Chute was awesome and the right bike, but early free ride was done on XC bikes being pushed way too far!
Are those fork boots splatter painted?

‘91 SM500 in highlighter blue
That’s the OEM rear tire so I can’t imagine it’s been used much. The front wheel is a replacement, but everything’s straight. It’s a 20” frame, I’m planning a drop bar conversion. Bottom brackets crunchy, that’ll need replacing.
I have most of the drive train from a ‘92/‘93 Canny tourer, the drops with twist grip shifters? I’m thinking it would be a riot to put drops and road twisties on a mountain bike...

Boots have particles of the Macaw tires, which are crumbling; and bits of other colored tires it came in contact with.

Did Suntour make Accushift road twisties before folding and making Shimano pattern stuff? If you change out the shifters for Shimano, the cassette won't want to play nicely. You'll be able to get the shifting on the lower 5 right, but the top two have slightly different spacing.
Actually I should make a new build thread. I was just excited about the old Canny and wanted to get pics up somewhere!

Thanks you for the heads up, but this is the cockpit I want to install, it’s all Suntour X1. I don’t think I’ll have problems unless the spacing between road and mountain is different, but I think touring and mountain were still using similar stuff?

I've been on a bit of a vintage mountain bike kick lately. I recently rebuilt my 1993 Bridgestone MB 1. This weekend I finished up my 1992 Trek 950. I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm digging the trekking bars and the continental travel contact 26 x 1.75 tires.
