Cool shot yet quite eerie to see 86th so void of people! I rode down to Central Park early this morning to do a 31 mile loop before work. Plenty of activity there!

I'm back up in SW Michigan. It was lovely here today. Riding here is easy peasy. It's hard to get lost, as all the rural roads are laid out on (I think) section lines, each one a half mile from the last. You go as far as you want to go in one direction, turn 90°, ride some more, turn another 90°, ride ride ride, make another 90° turn, then head home. Got in about 38 miles today.

Sometimes the pavement simply disappears. I'll have to clean the chain when I get home. Between this stuff and the fire drive (also not paved), the drivetrain collects dust pretty quickly. While the shifts are quieter, they are also a bit sluggish. The dust was kicked up by a trash hauler on his appointed rounds.


Mostly the roads are paved with few cars in sight, however.

Really fun ride up north of town that I haven't gone on in years. It's a kinda bumpy route, but pretty much only local traffic, so pretty quiet roads. Didn't stop much for photos, except the neat old one room school house.

Had the estate sale time capsule 87 Hardrock all sparkly and new, so I thought I’d show it what it was marketed as. We both chuckled and headed back to the beach on paved roads. Fun reminder of when brakes sort of worked and you bounced around and hoped for the best!



Camping up on Hood Canal in Washington. Love the inland waterways. This campground had some mellow neighborhoods next to it, so I could cruise around without worrying about big diesel trucks.



The Olympic Range is in those clouds somewhere.

Out for a pre-dawn ride on the '76 Motobecane Grand Touring. I left the house at 5:45am to beat the Texas heat. Great ride until the big red wasp hit and stuck to the inside of my left knee and planted its stinger into me about 2 miles from home.

Flowers everywhere on beachfront homes
A pretty leisurely ride but so quiet and relaxing. Checked out the Oregon Coast Cycle Trail down Highway 101. Tempting but some shoulders are pretty narrow, it might be more hair raising than I like. And with covid hard to plan out where to stay if not camping.

After the rain, a late afternoon leisurely 25 miler (yesterday). Glad I live in an area with more ‘land’ than ‘concrete’.

Look at this! A non garage/front door pic! I used a small section of one of our fabulous, but narrow and sidewalk following MUPs so I stopped for a pic. I had to cheat a little and turn away from the house for a 1.678429 mile spur but I got a 20 mile ride in finally!

Expanded the route to add a couple of miles to get to 30. Looked to my left as I was entering the part of the path that runs along the Rappahannock Canal and saw this:



Small steep hills are getting easier! Feeling a bit stronger and no cramps for a change.

Took my 13-year-old son out for some mixed-surface fun. He rode the 24-in wheeled Trek mtb with dropped bars and brifters, I rode my newly-built ‘73 Raleigh Competition running a 17/19T Surly Dingle with Nervar Star cranks with 42/44T rings. Our route included an out and back along the Cambridge Park rail trail, which turned out to be the perfect test track, including sections of hard-pack, crush ‘n’ run, big loose gravel, sand, mud and grass.

fabulous! I love blue herons. They are such graceful and patient hunts but often look like they are in a fowl mood brooding over some fish that got away.

My usual 30 mile ride linking a few rail trails together. I was going to add an extension on, but a line of storms that came through cut me short.

Stopped here for a snack as it was starting to sprinkle. Centennial Park here in town - this portion is prairie restoration, and home of a population a Franklin’s Ground Squirrel, a threatened species here in Illinois.

Rode up to Fort Sheridan. Temps in the early 90s and a broken mount for a second water bottle limited me to 40 miles.

"Gate 22" on a defunct part of the fort. Land is being sold for redevelopment.

Whenabouts were you in Corvallis/Oregon? Probably not before the bridge was built . This is the Harris covered bridge, down by Harris, west of Philomath/Corvallis, around mile 13/14 on the map in my earlier post. There is another covered bridge, in Corvallis on the Campus Way bike path, west of the Oregon State campus.

We did our annual St. Paul to Lake Waconia trip today.

About 46 miles each way.

On the way back we rolled through downtown Minneapolis and we were struck by the absence of summer tourists.

The last six months have been very tough on our local economy.....
