Shimano SHIMANO XT PD-T8000 SPD Pedals
So I bought a set of Shimano SHIMANO XT PD-T8000 SPD pedals for my bike. The user manual/instructions that came with them discuss how to change the short pins to long pins on the flat panel side. But there is no discussion of WHY I would want to shift from the short pins to the long pins. Does anyone know the pros/cons of shifting to the long pins?
Thanks!

- Additional grip on the pedal (more choices)
- Deeper gash, and more blood, if you slip off

When I got the pedals I put the longer pins in one of the pedals to test a difference. That was over 10k miles ago. They are still like that
I don't use the non SPD side often but when I do it is usually a dicey situation and I need good flat grip and they do that perfect.

Thanks for the replies and sharing your experience. They engineer in me was wondering if there was some exotic purpose like adding more weight to the non-SPD side to ensure the SPD side was always facing up.

Lol, maybe. They very much do default to SPD. Or my muscle memory had defaulted to that. I don't use them as a flats replacement, I use the flat sideas needed with my SPD shoes

Loved these pedals but they were a little wide for the more aggressive riding I was doing. Swapped them out for narrower ISSI Flip 3. Miss the auto rotate feature and the reflectors.

And once the seals have loosened up and most of the grease has disappeared, the SPD side usually faces aft. I am not familiar with your specific pedal, but my other SPD/platform pedals work that way.
