Seat post shim ?

I have a 26.0mm O.D. seatpost I would love to use in my bike with a 27.3mm I.D. seat tube. Possible ? I can get .25mm and .30mm SS shim stock from McMaster Carr. Anyone tried this ?

The frame is 27.2. You can order a shim that will get you from 26.0 to 27.2. Don't bother w/ shim stock, get the correct part.

How about this one about $10 shipped but you better hurry as it is the last one left.

Supposedly you can cut a shim out of an aluminum can (beer or coke). I tried it, and it was shredded by the time I got the saddle height right.

New seatpost was a lot less than the $50 shim you referenced above.

Hey, not so fast!

I was looking forward to a long drawn out thread with boasting, condescension, and outright lies!

Give it time, I am sure that can, and probably will happen.

Well, OK, if you insist.

I'm a Real Man, with a beer belly to prove it. My mighty beer belly is so awesome that I just set the too-skinny seatpost 1/2" too high, and jump on the saddle. I can balloon that sucker out so it'll never go any lower than the 1/2" it takes to set the seatpost in the seat tube. You skinny-arsed stick-legged wannabe cyclists can't compete with the might of my manliness!

(Did I hit all the hot buttons?)

Since the thickness of a beer can is about 0.1 mm, you'd need over ten wraps for this job with multiple pieces, and likely make a real mess out of it. There, is that contentious enough? We'll leave the beer belly out of it.

Glad to help but isn't this what this forum is for?

If anyone is inclined to try the beer can shim, your math is a bit off. One full wrap would increase the effective diameter 0.2 mm (0.1 mm per side of the post), so 10 wraps would add 2 mm to the diameter. If you need that much, it's going to be a mess, as you say, and buying a new seatpost of the correct size is warranted.

FWIW, most bike shops have a tool they can drop down in the seat tube and tell you what size seatpost you need to order.
