I ride these residential roads only going uphill, so going slow and usually announce biker back from a good distance, most often to people walking dogs. I personally like bells; don't have one but plan on giving one a try. When I was near the top of the mountain yesterday, I got passed by another e-bike and the rider apologized for cheating. I wonder how many issues there is going to be with inexperience riders on e-bikes especially on MUPs; hopefully this doesn't end up causing much more animosity towards cyclists but a fear it will.
I also don't ride on MUPs for the most part (~99% rides on road) and I've noticed a lot more e-bikes on the roads (in my area) and they seem to have the opinion that they're superior than you because they can pass you.

Not always.

They hate it when you jump on their wheel and then pass them.

Most also stick to the MUP so they can terrorize the pedestrians.

I hate that. I was touring in MT last year. One morning was cold and wet. I’m in the middle of nowhere, on a somewhat hilly road with a 70 mph speed limit and relatively narrow shoulder. I’m concentrating on staying safe, which task included being alert for deer, elk and anything else that might decide to wander out of the woods. (I’m convinced there are more deer than people in the state. The day before I spooked a herd of doe elk with calves and they ended up stampeding across the road in front of me.) Dude comes right over my left shoulder and says something as he’s just about even with me. Startled the Spandex off of me. I literally wished he would crash.

Turned out he was part of a supported group tour. The next few people who passed me also gave me late warning. I let one guy know that if I had to swerve to avoid something physics (I was riding a fully loaded bike) would likely make me the victor, like a semi colliding with a Miata.

Cyclists (nor motorists) can't sneak up on me, because I see them way in the rear before they get near, thanks to my mirror.

I passed a cyclist from the opposite direction and a pedestrian yesterday on an awkward part of the trail. All of us going super slow, like we were passing at the end of a grocery aisle. Neither of us on bikes said a word. The ped half hearted a "Jesus Christ." I immediately thought of Mr Slave and gave it my best impersonation.

I'm 70+ and started to use a mirror a few years ago since my hearing isn't what it used to be and it's harder to look over my shoulder (disc issues). It's great always knowing what's going on in the back with just a glance. I'll never be without one.

I may only see a few riders when out and sometimes none. I tend to acknowledge everyone and usually get a reply. In the rare instance when I pass someone I'll swing wide or say something like "Good morning."

I pass plenty of people with a bar mounted mirrors. They must of of bought it when they got the bike thinking it was a good idea.

Most never look at them.

Riders with helmet/eye glass mounted mirrors seem to be more diligent.

They're probably the same folks who don't use the mirrors in their cars. Or their turn signals either, for that matter.

Riding on some of the hairy roads I ride on, it's a very good idea to learn how to use a mirror. I guess on some MUPs people feel safe enough not to worry about what's behind them; out on the roads, I'm always having to make evasive moves due to people pulling in front of me.

How do you know that most of these people never look at their mirrors?

Because they seem surprised when I call out.

Perhaps some people act "surprised" when strangers "call out" at them; some of them may even not be conversant with cycling club/"serious rider" practices or its "call out" lingo and may not respond as expected by the "caller."

Sometimes I forget that I am traveling 21MPH when I suddenly curve around and see a chick walking. I flew by. She threw her apple at me.

Should newbies just stay off the steeper mountain trails? Will experienced riders have patience with timid riders? I think as an experienced rider, I'd be a little put off having to blow my speed rush in the middle of my favorite downhill part waiting on a newbie

Don't ever be distracted by other riders. Get out of their way when you can. Don't fall off a cliff trying to be the nice guy.

I can tell if someone sees me in their mirror. I can also tell, when they don't. How else would they be so surprised when I call out or they hear my bell?

Where I live most of the other bike riders are going the wrong direction in the lane so they see me coming.

Would you conclude from this observation that those "surprised" people never look in their mirrors?

A good thing about the cold weather is not having to have etiquette. The common areas become great again. Even those that like to spread a glass object into multiple pieces everywhere is far less. Good ole murica

I think this is a factor. Cars are much faster than bikes, so they're afraid of roads. Instead they go on MUPs, where they are much faster than pedestrians. Problem solved! Or, at least transferred...

Are you trying to beat some sort of confession from the poster?

I have no idea whether people look in their mirrors when I pass. I assume they don't and just announce as if they didn't have mirrors. I'd rather announce when it's unnecessary than err on the side of not giving a warning when it would have made a difference.

Is "passing on your left" plain enough language?

Some people actually don't know any better esp if they only cycle once in a while or casually(for ex: people who rent citibikes for a day)

No comment on the music, but I always wanted my Harley LOUD so cars knew I was there. And that was over 30 years ago. You couldn't get me on a motorcycle today with people texting and playing on their cell phones while driving
