Understand and follow these instructions. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/cables.html When trimming the final loop at the rear derailleur, I bend the housing to the approximate shape it will take when installed, then cut it. If you cut it while it is straight, when you bend it the wires at the ends will assume a diagonal shape which is not ideal. Take your time and cut that loop a little long initially and then trim the ends to fit exactly. You want the ends to enter the ferrules or cable stops as close to perpendicular as possible, so that there is minimum rubbing of the inner cable with the housing.

What model derailleur? Some have a guide for the cable that takes a bend. Are you asking about that bend or the bend within the housing?

Generally a larger smooth curve, is better than a short tight one..

+! Especially true with index systems. When indexing came about, that housing length roughly doubled.
