Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Caution

For a year and a half I have been running a set of Mavic Ksyrium UST and a set of Mavic Ksyrium Pro UST wheels using Mavic Yksion Pro UST tires with great results.I have gone thru a couple sets of tires never having a problem. After reading all the BS about the new Continental 5000TL I broke down and ordered a pair. After two hours I can't get the tires on the rims. Even if I got stronger tire levers I might have a chance but I doubt it and having a flat on the road that the sealant wouldn't seal I would have to call for a ride because I knw I could never install a tube. I wouldn't recommend trying these tires. You might end up like me with a set of Continental 5000TL sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Getting ready to order a new set of Yksion Pro UST's that are no trouble mounting with my bare hands. THANKS

I have been using Mavic Ksyrium UST and Kysrium Pro UST wheels for over a year and a half. Having used a couple sets of Mavic Yksion Pro UST tires with out any problems. After hearing all the BS about the new Continental 5000 TL I broke down and purchased a pair. After two hours of trying I can't mount the tires. If I ever did get then mounted I know I would never be able to install a tube out on the road if I had a flat that the sealant wouldn't seal. I would have to walk or call for a ride. Now I have a set of Continental 5000TL's sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I getting to order a set of Yksion Pro UST's that I can mount by hand and air up with a floor pump. You have been warned!

Obligatory Kool Stop tire bead jack plug. Or stick with tires you can mount by hand, that's perfectly ok too.

When I had a hole in my Schwalbe One fail to seal on an Ultegra 6700 or 6800 rim, I had a major hassle getting a tube installed.

I had only gone tubeless on one, and eventually swapped tires and mounted the Schwable One on the RS-10 wheel which was much easier.

AFAIK, UST rims require that you use UST tires. Maybe I'm mistaken though... ?

+1 this. And the more portable VAR bead jack to carry on the road. It doesn't have quite the stiffness or leverage of the Kool Stop, but still gets the job done.

I’m running the same wheel/tire combo as you and I have heard the exact same thing from others about the Conti 5000 and UST rims....impossible to mount. I too am sticking to Yksion Pros as they have been trouble free and Mavic customer service has always been above par.

Do the UST rims have much of a well in the centre to put the bead in when mounting?
I had a set of tubeless rims that were very shallow. Some tubeless tyres were absolutely impossible to mount.

On my Vision 40 wheels, Continental GP5000 (tubeful) were the easiest mounting tires I've ever put on a modern bike. Never needed a tool or blow dryer or vaseline - and didn't need to pop a vein in my forehead straining to get them on, let alone have to bring out the Koolstop!

So.. to go a bit OT: The UST standard was a 3-company sponsored launch from what I've read -- Mavic, Hutchinson and Michelin. Have I missed it, or does there not seem to be such a thing as a Michelin UST TL tire for road? Anyone have an idea why that is?

Not sure on your specific question, but this reminded me that the new Schwalbe Pro One Souplesse are made to the newly-established ERTRO tubeless specs. From what I understand, the new standard is based heavily on the Road UST, so we might have some more firmly established goal posts, which would be good for everyone, and the promise for a broader tire selection for Mavic wheel owners.

The question is simply why Michelin decided to be one of 3 parties co-sponsoring the creation and launch of the UST tubeless standard (20 years ago I think), yet as a tire company, so many years later they aren't selling a 700c TL UST road tire? (edit.. they do seem to have a Power Gravel model that is tubeless.. not much out there about it though). Anyway.. just curious.

And only ride when it is really hot? You might have to put in a tube.
