Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Great Wheel Builders in the Washington DC Metro Area

Hi

Can anyone recommend a great wheelbuilder in the DC Metro Area - ideally MD or NoVa. I am looking to get some wheelsbuilt up from the high end vintage hubs and new rims and spokes etc.

Also any idea on prices per hour for build?

Thanks

Arb

Two come to mind -- Matt Moore at Cyclelife in Georgetown has built me two sets, and has done a really nice job. I had a set made some time ago by Bill Mould at Spokes in Alexandria. Bill tends to make wheels to be bombproof, Matt was a little more focused on feel.

Been a while since I looked at price. I think both are in the $80 per wheel range.

that price is about right, maybe a little on the high end. I just had my cheap Chinese clincher rims built up at Bicycle Pro Shop (Alexandria location) by Carl. He really knows what he's doing.

November is in Kensington, MD. I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine if you dropped off a set of hubs, they'd lace them up to rims for you.

I kinda doubt it, since they stopped doing any custom builds (per their blog), but hey, give it a try, what do I know...

Travis Evans at Just Riding Along Bike Shop in Laytonsville, MD. Have him build you a set of "Rolling Blackouts"; straight butter and about as bomb-proof as they come.

If you are in N. VA - call Green Lizard in Herndon or The Bike Lane in Reston.
