I run 12 speeds on most of my road bikes, in either half-step or 1.5-step ("Alpine"). My freewheel combos, including 14-16-18-20-23-26 and 13-15-17-20-23-26, are listed explicitly in the article, although I use them with smaller chainrings than they do (50-42 instead of 52-43, and 45-42 instead of 52-49).

Hard to believe that there was a time when a 12 speed bike was cutting age and people argued over whether this was a fad or not.

When setting up a half step and granny on one of my bikes it becomes obvious that modern chain makes all the gears available and also I get more useful gearing than on most any bike I can buy new. The hunt for cogs seems to have not brought about much that is useful to me. With the possible exception of more flexible chain.
