Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NEED HELP!!!! Trying to decide on which entry level road bike to buy

Hi All,

I am very new to the world of road biking, and have been trying to compare specs from all manufacturers. It is overwhelming to say the least. What bike manufacturer, how many gears, which shifters and derailers and tires would you all suggest. I am not looking to spend much (can't really afford it) so please keep that in mind. I'm even looking to buy a used bike. But, is tiagara that important? Thanks for your thoughts.

Jon

What is available in your area? You can narrow it down by visiting your local bike shop and trolling craiglsist. There's also BikeDirect.

What's your budget for bike? What are your riding goals? you will also need money for accessories like bibs, jerseys, pump, etc.....
Also search forums, there are tons of posts like this

+1 on craigslist

Look into the Trek 1.1
Got that for my first road bike a little over a month ago and love it.

True. It's sort of like "rock soup." You start with an inexpensive, basic bike, but once you've added all of the accessories, especially after reading all of the suggestions on this forum, you find yourself broke, divorced, and huffing spray paint from a dumpster outside of Home Depot. Don't huff spray paint from a dumpster outside of Home Depot.

I would also recommend Craigslist and BikesDirect. BikesDirect can get you into a starter bike for very little money (comparatively) but you will be looking at probably a triple chainring 24 gear bike. To get into a 20 speed bike (non triple) you are looking at rough twice the $$$ basically somewhere around $700+. Also as everyone has said you will need the following items at a bare minimum:
pedals
shoes
riding shorts or bibs
helmet (for this you can get a helmet at Walmart for as little as $16 but I recommend getting the best you can afford for obvious reasons)
pump
Water bottles (cheap)

You can shop around and surf the net to find the best deals and hit places like REI and your local bike shop and hit their close out rack.

Items you will want and need but later will be:
extra tube and patch kit
Jersey
gloves
socks
Cycling computer
and I'm sure there are other things but right now I just can't think...

One thing to note is that once you have everything listed this sport becomes very inexpensive, unless you are like me and almost everyone else on here that gets the bug and has to get the newer latest greatest thing...

Hope this helps, Good luck

As a starting point, I strongly urge you to check out this link; print it and read it a few times. In addition, this will lead you to a few other links.

https://www.bikeradar.com/gear/articl...er-1000-32772/

After reading a few times, you'll then an idea of what you are looking for. Then you can test-drive a few models to get a real-world idea of which one you'd really like. This approach worked perfectly for me; I opted for the Specialized Allez Elite - your likes/dislikes will determine which one you prefer.

I’m not quite sure the urgency of the situation justifies all caps and four exclamation points.
