I dropped my son at the airport at 4am today morning for his flight back to Denver. I drove north to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in time to get a 1/2 day of skiing in.

I will never forget that 1st ride up the tram.

Yee Haw! Jackson Hole.. by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

Low clouds, light snow and fog as the tram left the base area. Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t fear the Reaper” playing loudly over the intercom as we ascended into the clouds. This mountain is another legendary place in skiing. Steep terrain, cliffs, chutes and bowls dominate the landscape. Over 4,000 ft higher, the tram drops you off at the top to a howling wind and almost zero visibility. I am skiing alone and haven’t been here before. Yea, I was intimidated. I carefully made my way down the icy bumps of Rendezvous Bowl until I found the tree line which made it easier to see. I followed a mountain host with his collection of skiers until I reached a marked run..

There was 11’ of new the next day and the visibility was much better. I could finally relax a bit and explore.

The famous ski run “Corbetts Couloir” was closed for the day

After 4 days of skiing I was tired and ready for home. Leaving early the next morning it took 2 days of driving to get there. Glad to be home.

Beautiful morning, I drove over 600 miles today. Just a day away from home now. by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

Wow, that’s quite the trip for you. 😲😎👌 I could never keep up with you guys, especially hill-climbing. 🙄😉

Going through Jacumba Hot Springs yesterday & this morning, I was about 100 yards (?) from the Mexican border. That’s some fence. 😲 I saw the Border Patrol apprehend one guy, and saw them beating the bush in 3 more spots. It’s weird, they never even really looked at me on my bike. I imagine surveillance is fairly sophisticated these days. 🤔

Yeah, and it felt weird at first. I built up the Motobecane Le Champion frameset I bought at Eroica a year ago out of bin parts.

It was hard not to take a torch to it and put bottle and shifter bosses on it, but it was a last minute build for this trip.

After spending the night in Sierra Vista, google directed us to Hwy 83 back to Interstate 10. It was a lot prettier than coming back the way we came on Arizona 90. We came up to a Border Patrol check somewhere around Sonoita - in an RV - and they just waved us through. The RV was just a few miles from the Mexican border the previous day.

What's the going rate for a Coyote?

Yeah, Matt and I were in his car ahead of the RV. In the orange cone chute before the Border Patrol stop, there was an array of 3-4 sensors, one of which I caught a flash out of the corner of my eye. Agents leaned in and just asked if we were US citizens, we said “yes” and he waved us on. I suppressed an urge to blurt out nervously “yes, and no, we don’t have a trunk full of weed, meth, and immigrants”.

Matt, thanks for the pics and the great write up. You are the king of the travelogue! Everyone should also know that in addition to being a great riding partner and RV sharer, Matt provided indispensable chauffeur services, schlepping us all out to eat every night, getting us and our bikes back and forth to the airport with nary a word of complaint.

Man, I'm hoping we don't go back and rename this The Last Bicycle tour of 2020.

Maybe the last group tour. Solo tours for the foreseeable future!

That let you think about something else (like breakfast) for 2 hours until your next cup was due.

Eastern Oregon this July will be here before you know it. If that one doesn't pan out, think about joining me on a Selkirk Loop in BC...

That was my fault. I assumed there'd be a coffee maker and let everyone know not to worry.

Old Route 80 here in California is essentially a frontage road for I-8. Near Pine Valley, 80 crosses under 8, and there’s a Border Patrol checkpoint about a mile before you get there. It was closed today, when I went past, but there’s a shooting range out back a bit, that was pretty active. 😲 😁 They also had a weird-looking trailer/cage on wheels, and I couldn’t figure out if it was for K-9s or prisoners. 🤔

They don’t care about cannabis much at all anymore. I mean within reason. I imagine a semi-trailer load of the stuff might ruffle some feathers. 😁😉 A nice lady gave me a small sample of cannabis syrup today, for medibles, but I didn’t want to sample it, while riding down mountains. 🤪😁😉

Fun to look back at the carefree times we had on the "Last bike tour of 2020." I rode to from Patagonia to Parker Canyon Lake very near where we were at Montezuma Pass recently and want to take you all there. So many good routes down that way. You all have to return post vaccination. Maybe Hugh can show up with 6 pack of Pfizer shots and take care of business for all of us before the next tour--aka "The first bike tour of 2021?"

Thought I’d bump this thread today as it’s exactly a year since I flew from Boston to Phoenix for this wonderful adventure. Not only that, but my spring break is cancelled this year! Oh man.

I want to freely travel again so bad.
Just like everyone else I guess.

I bought a Ritchey Breakaway last summer. Boy that was optimistic.

That was a cool trip and so very glad we got it in under the wire.

That's very helpful so that I make sure not to wear the same outfits again (and I won't be on the same bike).

Good, don’t want to be bored with your clothing choices.
Also looks like it was a lot colder in 2020 than it will be this year.
Plus…no RV. And a POOL!
