We are pretty fortunate, as @northbend notes, that one can get around here pretty well almost exclusively on MUPs. There are even a couple additional, shortish, unpaved "corridors", like this one: Cross Kirkland Corridor:
Part of it was being repaired this past summer, and I don't know if that section's been re-opened, but normally it will link from Woodinville all the way to the I-90 Trail.

15 miles today on my little folding bike dropping off mail and packages. Knees are sore. It drizzled lightly for the last 7 miles. Just above freezing.

Very pretty Gitane! Single speed or fixed gear?
I have no pictures, but I rode 11 miles yesterday on my fixed gear '76 Motobecane Grand Jubilee. My first ride in about three weeks, even though it was short it felt so good to get out on the road.

Thanks! It has a fixed/SS flip flop hub but I am currently riding it SS. I have not mastered fixed yet.

Sunny skies and a deceptive 44 degrees today. A steady ice cold NW wind made things feel a lot colder. Still, after a couple of gloomy wet days, it was a joy to get some sun at least on my face. Did about 20 miles on the Pinarello outside Free Union at the base of the Blue Ridge.
Muted joy as this was the turn into about 5 miles of stiff, cold headwind.

Just got back from a 40 kilometers jaunt out in the country to a coffee shop there. It's around -14C with a windchill factor of -22C which isn't too bad. the side roads are quite ice but now problem with the decent quality knobby tires I have on my MTB converted to dropbar with interrupter levers and V-brakes. the ride was very quiet as as usual in the evenings there's hardly any traffic.
I think that tomorrow I'll put the dropbar main brake levers made for V-brakes on it as the regular levers are too soft. I wouldn't ride this bike were it not for those interrupter brake levers.

There is something absolutely magical about riding along a snow-packed road or trail, or over riding along a road or trail with a fresh covering of snow, at night under a full or nearly full moon. It's other worldy.

Just when you think you're done for the year, Chicago weather delivers a holiday gift.
Today, the first day of winter, was an inconceivable 53 degrees, with cloudless skies. Ended up riding 45 miles down to the south side. By the end, I was baking like a Christmas ham.
Early in the ride, I got a "sneak preview" of the new bike bridge over the North Shore Channel. Looking forward to using this next year to get down to Albany Park.
Ran into a treacherous section of the path, just after Oak st. Beach. The lake level is at a record high and encroaching on the path. This combined with shade creates sheets of ice.
Last week, a salt truck slid into the lake on this same stretch of the path. Everyone OK, thankfully.
South of the loop, there are tons of these 1950s high-rises along lake shore drive. There is a strong connection between these and my childhood memories of the city.
Down around 48th, the pedestrian trail is closed from storm damage. If the lake keeps rising, some re-routing will need to happen.
I like what they did with this restroom. Unfortunately, all the bathrooms are closed for the winter, making pitstops and refills a challenge on longer rides.
Turned around at Promontory Point (5500 S.). Nice view looking up South Lakeshore Drive.
Unlike most of the lakefront, Promontory Point retains its limestone revetment. Hyde Park locals fought hard to keep these, instead of concrete proposed by the city. You can still see the drill holes from when the rock was removed from the quarry.

Finally got out on my Nigel Dean Tourmaster today as work has stopped and the sun came out after a lot of rain recently.
Spot the bike in the bushes! Pretty flat around here but the ride back was uphill with a wind against me so I got a good work out!
This is not the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest but a good cousin of it! It is in Stapleford Woods, Lincs.
A pleasant ride out and 12 km which was a good start after not riding for some months. I saw one other cyclist going the other way with whom I exchanged a "good morning" in true British style!

I'm off of work for 2 weeks over the holidays, and I told myself that I was going to ride every day. So far it's going well - 32 miles on my Trek on Saturday and 20 on my fixed-gear Motobecane yesterday.
Forecast is looking great through Friday, too! Unfortunately Christmas day won't have any time at all for a ride due to family obligations, but maybe that will be a good thing to take a day off

I have a bit over one week to go in 2019 to reach my 5,000 mile goal. The flu knocked me out for the past week but I plan to subtract at least 25 miles from the remaining 80 tomorrow morning. Great photos all!

Yesterday, when my daughter and I were walking her dog in town, I met an older guy, riding a C&V. turns out he had worked at Paris Sport in the '70s, and we had been to some of the same races in 1975... So today was warm, 55+ I wanted to ride my old beast, the Ron Cooper that I had my best times on, once more before the end of the year. Haven't ridden it much thisa year, putting more miles on younger bikes, a '90s Serotta most often. Of course I had taken the finned Mathausers off the Coop to put on a recently acquired Teledyne Titan, and not replaced them. Took me a long time to get out the door. I didn't ride hard or very far, but it felt great.
I took a picture to send to my daughter, and all of a sudden I thought if this was the last time I ever did this for some reason, I felt good about being on the Cooper. I'm not morbid or a worrying type. Anything but...I still ski like a nut, always ride roads clipped in, etc. etc. Just a weird passing thought.
