car racks - for cars with a moon/sun roof

I never have had a roof car rack before. Was considering getting one for my bike and also to transport skis.

But i am worried i have a moon roof on my car that i like to open and use.
do the racks go right over the roof and would it be damaging to my moon roof?

if anyone knows of a car rack that would not damage my moon roof, what types should i consider?

What kind of car do you have? Do you have rails for attaching the system?

Most rack systems would grant enough clearance for most externally-opening sunroofs, provided you put the towers in the right place. If you live near a retailer who sells racks, they should be able to help you better than BF can.

It looks like Yakima's Q-Towers give plenty of room for a sunroof. Just check the movement as you're installing everything to ensure there's no interference with the sunroof and you should be fine.

Probably any roof rack designed for your car will allow the use of the moon roof.

I have had my Thule rack for 20 years and used it on quite a few cars with both intrnally and externally opening moon roofs. It works fine but I can tell you from experience that you probably won't want to use the moonroof while the rack is up there anyway due to noise.

I have a Yakima on a Ford Focus with a moonroof with no issues at all. I'll agree with blamp28 though, you probably won't want to open it because the wind noise is deafening.
