My only SS is a beater, but it's been enough to make me want an SS that ticks a few more boxes - this seems to cover all of them. Want, want, want. Must save some shekels.

I donno, I got a full custom Zona Megatube frame for $900 from Marinoni. Probably could have upgraded to Life tubing (comparable to 853) for still less than 1200. Curtlo also does full custom with True Temper OX plat starting at 990.

Did that include a full carbon fork ?

I didn't look extensively, but that fork looks like it sells in the $400 range.

Marinoni included alloy steerer, carbon fork. Also included headset and seat collar.

Curtlo is frame only to my knowledge.

Curtlo and Gunnar both do full custom under $1200 using True Temper OX Plat , which is actually slightly stronger than Reynolds 853. Gunnar has stock frames under $1000.
Marinoni does full custom starting at $900 (CDN, so like $825 USD) with Columbus Zona megatube, but you can pick from the Columbus lineup. Marinoni also includes fork + headset + collar.
Spicer Cycles does full custom starting at $700, and works with a variety of tubesets. Worth contacting Gene to see what he can do.

So basically your Marinoni would be a bit cheaper with a full carbon fork than the Nature Boy 853 and the Curtlo would be more expensive. Also, FWIW, the Nature Boy 853 has a tapered steerer / head tube with oversized lower headset bearings.

I think it's a sick looking bike. I'd just consider going custom. Though I did just read it's actually a Whisky fork. That's pretty solid.

Is the only difference between the 853 Nature Boy (or the defunct Nature Boy Zona) and the Chromoly Nature Boy just the frame weight? Or is the 853/Zona so much stiffer than the Chromoly that it handles like a completely different bike?

I have one of the 612 Chromoly NBs, so I know I love the frame but I can't imagine the additional expense would be worth it. But I think about it...

Now it just needs a thru-axle slider rear.

EDIT: Also, 42:18 is a HUGE gear if it's meant to be race-ready.

Does anyone build that? I've looked and not found anything.

Alternatively, a thru-axle rear fixed hub with an eccentric BB.

They're pretty proud of their QR disc track ends, so I doubt they'd switch to TA.

My Kona Honzo had a TA slider. I don't think it's that uncommon.

Also, the new finish is really nice:

Depends on the course, early season cross in PDX I'll run 39x16 but come mud season, 39x18 is my jam.

I settled on 39x19 as my gear of choice. I just don't have the horse power to quickly accelerate a taller gear repeatedly.

Really nice bike and great color.

I have a question: Since there are no gears to shift, why are the brake lever housings the same size (length) as brifters? Integrated master cylinder?

(I was going to put this in quick questions thread, but this one seemed more appropriate)

I visited my local All City dealer today and they can get me a brand new 2016 Nature Boy 853 (complete) for $1500. How do the components compare to the 2017? Or, would I come up with a better bike if I buy a frameset and build it custom? I have the budget for all 3, and I've kinda been lusting after the NB 853 since they were introduced in 2014

(I'm partial to the green, but the blue ain't too shabby)
