2007 Trek 7.3 FX & max studded tire width for snow

Currently I commute to work using one of my road bikes. I do have a Trek 7.3 FX (2007), and with the looming winter months & snow, I want to avoid driving as much as possible. I have plenty of experience commuting in cold winter weather, but I've always drove in to work when snow and/or ice is on the roads.

My question is, I'm considering buying some 700 x 35c studded tires. Marathon Winter HS 396 | Schwalbe North America

Currently the Trek has 700 x 32c smooth Bontrager tires.

The 700 x 35c studded Schwalbe tires should fit right? Could I run an even wider studded tire than that? I don't know much about studded tires, so want to make the best informed purchase. Would say a 700 x 40c tire be any better in the snow than a 700 x 35c tire (if the bike can even run a 35c or 40c).

Thanks!

On my 2011 7.3 FX, I was using some 40mm cyclocross tires for a while, and it was as tight as I would care to go. If the clearance on yours is the same, then it depends on how much clearance you would like. Probably way too tight if you wanted to use fenders.

I am currently running 35s, and think the clearance might be OK whether or not you want to use fenders.
